Alethia St. Joan and Daniel Carroll

Queer Projection

Arts EN ↓ 27 episodes

This is a movie podcast about finding queer themes damn near everywhere. Hosts Alethia St. Joan and Danny Carroll share a 30+ year friendship that has been bound together by a shared love for movies. A trans woman and a gay man respectively, Alethia and Danny explore what these movies meant to them while they were young and closeted, and what revisiting these movies means for the actualized, arguably maladjusted adults they’ve become. It’s a heady, often crass and sometimes crude blend - part nostalgia trip, part queer theory, part film criticism. Check it out!

Episodes

Rushmore 08.07.2026

Blazers on, we're SAVING LATIN with Wes Anderson's sophomore feature and the birth of his indelible aesthetic. This one's a love fest as we rediscover Wes's grand thesis on the beauty of the fallible human heart, in full bloom. Jason Schwartzman's debut. Bill Murray at his absolute best. Enjoy!

American Beauty 01.07.2026

Don't @ us. For the 1999 crowd, this was a major event. Is this a bad movie? Is this a sinister movie? Is this a misunderstood movie? We're going to try and figure that out while navigating around the Kevin Spacey shaped elephant in the room. Cue the marimba, and enjoy!

PRIDE BONUS: Gender Troublemakers 26.06.2026

You've likely never seen this one. A home video VHS short from the early 90s that you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlQurqYjS_g This is a lot different from our usual episodes, kid. We get real personal. For better or worse. Let's dive into the dialogue between the big G and the big T.  Enjoy!

George Washington 24.06.2026

No, this isn't a film about the first president. This is David Gordon Green's debut film about the miserable state of forming a self-identity in the midst of impoverished youth. It's very much not Pineapple Express, if that's the only DGG movie you've seen - but it's got remarkable bits of the Righteous Gemstones in there. Or at least I think so. If you haven't s...

The Virgin Suicides 17.06.2026

We take another dour and sexy walk down the twisting roads of suburbia with Sofia Coppola's directorial debut. Let's reflect again on the miserable state of being a teenager, and watch Kirsten Dunst cement her place as the existential dark comedy queen. Enjoy!

BONUS: I Saw the TV Glow 12.06.2026

BONUS EPISODE -- This episode was originally released to subscribers last year, and as a special kickoff we're releasing it wide! We get really personal in this one, so be gentle with our vulnerabilities as we explore the Midnight Realm.  Reminder: Bonus Episodes break the QP mold! We usually cover the non-queer feature films we loved growing up and pull the queer stuff out, so Bonus Eps are...

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 10.06.2026

We're back, and Season 3 kicks off with one of our childhood VHS holy grails: Steven Spielberg's E.T. Just in time for Disclosure Day and more of his alien shenanigans, we're digging into the queer nature of loving a slightly drunk extraterrestrial with your whole chest. Join us as we reflect on the legacy of phoning home while doing our level best not to sexualize the kindest littl...

Magnolia (Second Tape) 22.01.2026

Season 2 finale, sweet mama baby. Rub the sleep from your eyes, brush them teeths while you think about the First Tape, and then pop the Second Tape into the VCR and let it all rain down. We go out of our way in this installment to dissect the plot beat by beat and pull out all that PTA existential queer goodness. We have so much love to give, and we put it in this episode. This is Part 2 of our f...

Magnolia (First Tape) 15.01.2026

It's time to tackle one of the most important movies in our decades long friendship. How is this our favorite movie if it isn't even our favorite Paul Thomas Anderson movie? What was it about this frog-fallin' fantasia of human suffering that dealt such a glancing blow to our adolescent brains? We take apart this treasured ensemble film to try and see what made it tick, and why afte...

Being John Malkovich 19.12.2025

We ping pong back and forth between this movie being really understanding of the trans experience to thinking it's pretty damn transphobic. I mainly had no memory of this movie being so trans - glad we're revisiting! I'm kinda not okay! But either way, we love love love Charlie Kaufman, the poor bastard. Enjoy!

Batman Returns 04.12.2025

Put your catsuit on, cutie. And let's take a psychosexual gothic ride through the most subversive Batman installment to date. Who truly captures the freak flag in this movie? The deformed, bile-spewing Danny DeVito masterclass? The timid bachelorette who finally smashes the neon and cracks the feline whip? Or the millionaire sadboi dipweed (with a butler) who can yank their mask off like it&a...

Kill Bill: Vol. 2 20.11.2025

Our hearts explode for Uma in this episode. Come wriggle your way outta that lonely grave and enjoy the end of this bloody ride. Have fun!

Titanic 14.11.2025

Use the restroom before this one. We dive deep down to where many a podcast has gone before to try and find some unanswered questions about the biggest blockbuster of our youth. Why do lesbians love Jack so much? Why did I start crying about climate change halfway through the sinking? Why do I get so mean about those guys who died in the sub implosion? So let us take you by the hand down to the bo...

Scream 31.10.2025

SOMEONE’S TAKEN THEIR LOVE OF QUEER THEMES ONE STEP TOO FAR! Is this camp, is this parody, is this satire? We juggle these ideas as Danny grapples with his patent dislike of slasher films. Is Scream the exception? Let's find out! Happy Halloween!

BONUS: One Battle After Another 29.10.2025

Holding off on our Halloween episode a couple days for a minor medical recovery - in the meantime, we bring you our first formula breaking BONUS EPISODE. Paul Thomas Anderson constructed our teenage personalities - so any time a PTA movie comes out, we're gonna need to cover it. And this one did not disappoint. His most sincere, vulnerable, and beautiful movie since Magnolia. Viva la revoluti...

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 22.10.2025

Here comes the bride! Lots of stuff in this one. Is revenge queer? How often does Quentin Tarantino win shouting matches with journalists? And why does a bloody, violent tour de force of vengeance resonate so strongly with the rainbow mafia? Is it the catsuit? It's the cat-suit (it's not the cat suit). We absolutely love this movie - so sharpen your Hanzo sword, move that big toe, and jo...

Clueless 15.10.2025

What is growth, what is change? Is it Di accidentally getting on the freeway? Tye using ‘sporadically’ in a sentence? Is it Cher finding love in the unlikeliest of places in this fairy tale vision of Beverly Hills circa 1995? We're stretching the boundaries of this podcast and revisiting not a sleepover favorite for me and Alethia, but an ambient sleepover favorite of the 90s, AS IF we weren&...

Mulholland Drive 08.10.2025

Here we go, it's Season 2! Kicking things off with the nightmares and dreamscapes of David Lynch's Hollywood, including the wig that made Naomi Watts. Do you feel like maybe you're at the end of your rope and ready to cash in all your dreams and just give up? Maybe not the best movie to watch right now. Or the perfect movie to watch right now. We'll leave that one to you. There...

A.I. Artificial Intelligence 10.09.2025

What is the nature of consciousness? Will we ever have a child actor the likes of Haley Joel Osment again? Does "protect the dolls" extend to little robot boys? Take our hand and come with us to a magical land, just like Jude Law's robot gigolo took that little robot boy's hand. Flesh fairs, fascism, and the terror of parenthood. This gorgeous nightmare has it all. Final episod...

Terms of Endearment 27.08.2025

Get your tissues, gurl. This is for the kids who love to cry. And laugh, and cry, and laugh, and then cry again. I know we love it. This movie asks, among other questions, what does it mean to be a woman? And while right-wing pundits hammer that question home for nefarious reasons, we have a much more heartfelt answer brought to us via power-house performances by Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger....

Schizopolis 20.08.2025

I was too embarrassed to tell Steven Soderbergh how much I loved him while I was working for him, so instead we made this podcast about one of his most interesting and least recognized movies. What's queer about this one? Mainly how the nature of heartbreak and self doubt can rend reality and make you a stranger to yourself. Deep stuff! Great movie! Maybe Soderbergh will listen? Steven, call...

Close Encounters of the Third Kind 13.08.2025

Is this Richard Dreyfuss at his most Bushwick homosexual? Is leaving your family to climb aboard an alien spaceship a form of queer liberation? Do multi-jointed spider-humanoid aliens qualify as twinks because they're thin and hairless? Well, I don't know if you care to have those questions answered, but in this episode we sure try. Check it out!

Punch-Drunk Love 06.08.2025

Is it only natural to be envious of Paul Thomas Anderson's career? Is Emily Watson an alien? Could a movie like this survive modern neurodivergence discourse without becoming a movie about two autistic adults falling in weird love? Let's revisit one of the best romcoms of our romantic teenage years and find out. SHUT-SHUT-SHUT the door, draw the blinds, and come join us.

Gummo 30.07.2025

This one is for the film buffs. This one is NOT for people who really love cats. We discuss weird teenage bodies, dire socioeconomic situations, and Chloe Sevigny kissing Bunny Boy. Is this a science fiction movie? Not really, but Werner Herzog certainly seems to think so. Is he right? Let's find out!

The Truman Show 23.07.2025

Do you have main character syndrome? As maladjusted queers, we certainly do. Know who REALLY had main character syndrome? Truman Burbank. Named for the giant soundstage that consumed the town of Burbank CA in The Truman Show. Come with us as we sail off and break free from this heteronormative cookie-cutter life the same way he did. Let's go!
