Sad is hard, and we try to avoid it as much as we can.  But there are times that call for sadness.  Ezra shows us how it's done.            

What can we learn from Ezra as he organizes his travel party from Babylonia to Jerusalem?  How should we conduct ourselves in light of what we see there?  We dig into Ezra 8 to find out.

Ezra was a man who had devoted his life to the Law of God, and now he takes that dedication back to Jerusalem to help the Jews there study, do, and teach that Law. 

We see our final and most dramatic reversal in Esther 9 as we see the roots of Purim and the legacy left by hatred and greed.

We see the rest of the dramatic reversal in Esther in chapter 8, with Mordecai taking Haman's place.  But how does that affect us?  And how does it fit into the story of redemption?

Pride comes before destruction.  We see that lived out in the life and death of Haman is Esther 6 and 7.

The first message in our worship series

As sheep among wolves, we have to be ready to plan, be courageous, and DO what God calls us to do.  Esther shows us what that looks like in Esther chapter 5.

How would you handle being put in a place where your life, or the lives of others, are hanging in the balance of your decisions or actions?  Esther comes to that place this week in a critical point of the narrative. 

Our choices and our acts always have consequences, positive or negative, short and long term.  How serious can one decision be?  How long can the ramifications play out?  We see this and more in Esther 2 and 3.

How should we fit into the culture around us?  Is there a difference in our conduct and behavior to the point of standing out?  Mordecai and Esther show us how not to stand out in a pagan culture.  

Does God go to parties?  Is God in control when sinners sin and people neglect Him?  What is Providence?  These are issues addressed as we being our study in Esther.

What is Christmas all about?  It's about the Gospel.  And what is the Gospel about?  It's about the presents.  Plain and simple.

Finding the joy in doing exactly what you're supposed to, in living just like you were made to is an elusive proposition.  Are you missing a piece of your perfect life?  What if you found the exact thing you needed to live life to the fullest?  We see a picture of that in the Jews and their Passover celebration.  

It feels great to finish a task and especially if that task has taken a while.  What does it take to get big projects and tasks done?  The Jews show us as they finish the Temple.

Encouraging words are great when we need them.  They're even better when they are from God.  The returned exiles see this first hand through Haggai and Zechariah.

Ever feel discouraged?  Ever just quit as a result?  How should we handle feeling discouraged?  Ezra 4 helps us see this in action.

Sometimes even our best efforts can lead to some people being disappointed.  How do we deal with everyday life and the task at hand when this happens?  The people of Jerusalem in the book of Ezra help us see in our passage today.

What do you do when you are afraid?  What should you do?  If we follow the exiles' example, we will worship.  

Names, names, and more names.  Does this really matter to us?
