What happened in these two gospel accounts is really interesting! Mark tells us Jesus went to a house, and basically wanted to be left alone, but this woman fell at his feet begging him for mercy for her daughter who was demonized. Why her daughter was demonized in the first place makes me wonder what the heck was going on but that’s another story we will never know.

God’s command, first and foremost, is that we love Him and love one another. We are adept at making all kinds of excuses, including religious excuses, for not doing that. And, of course, that’s not the only command we work around. I wonder how many of Jesus’ commands I avoid, ignore or rationalize away. When we are so focused on the rules, we can easily lose sight of loving people. We must choose...

First of all, following being sent out two-by-two, John the Baptist had just been beheaded, and so, Jesus took his disciples to a quiet place to get away, decompress, and debrief. There is something we all need and that is rest, and to unplug regularly. Especially after Jesus had just lost his cousin John he and his disciples needed to take a break.

The disciples had been taught and they watched Jesus as he went from village to village speaking, healing the sick and casting out demons. Now, he wanted them to go and do the same.
