这十二封信以有中学程度的青年为对象，并未曾指定某一收信人的姓名，谁是中学程度的青年，谁就是收信人，谁都应该读一读这十二封信。 每封信以青年们所正在关心，或应该关心的事项为题，如读书、修身、作文、社会运动、爱恋、哲理，凡此种种。自 朱光潜 先生笔下汩汩流淌的，是如长者劝导似的语重心长，如老友交谈般的诚恳真挚，读来亲切自然，受益颇多。作者虽随了个话题抒述其意见，统观全体，却似乎也有一贯的出发点可寻，就是劝青年眼光要沉，要从根本上做工夫，要顾到自己，勿随了世俗图近利。
