The well-known story of Jonah is the story of a reluctant prophet who runs away from the Lord and his call. But sometimes lost in the story is the gracious God who runs after Jonah, and rescues him by his grace. The book of Jonah is a gospel story that reveals Christ as our Gracious Savior.

The prophets Joel, Amos, and Obadiah proclaim both the righteous judgment and unfailing mercy of the Lord. They call God's people to repentance, warn of the coming Day of the Lord, and point to the hope of restoration for all who return to Him. The prophet Hosea was given a difficult assignment from the Lord. He was called to marry a woman who would be unfaithful to him. This would be a dramatic picture of the unfaithfulness of Israel in relationship to the Lord. But even more than his people’s unfaithfulness, we see the faithful covenant love of God. In Hosea, Christ is revealed as our Redeeming Husband.

The book of Daniel is full of visions from God about future events. Before any of those is a dream God gives the king of Babylon that reveals Christ as our Kingdom Conquerer.

The book of Ezekiel shares the visions God gave this prophet during Israel’s exile in Babylon. There is hope ahead as the Lord promises to send a leader who would guide his people. Christ is seen in Ezekiel as our Good Shepherd.

The book of Lamentations reveals the brokenness and mourning of God’s people due to the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of many to Babylon. Yet through it all, God is faithful. Christ is revealed as our Merciful Portion.

God is a covenant God who is always faithful to his promises. His people, however, often fail and show themselves unfaithful. But in the book of Jeremiah, the Lord promises a new covenant, one that is better and lasting. Christ is revealed in Jeremiah as our New Covenant.

The Book of Isaiah is a prophetic book that calls God’s people to repentance while revealing His holiness, judgment, comfort, and promise of future restoration through a coming Messiah. Through vivid prophecies of redemption, hope, and salvation for all nations, It points to Christ as our Suffering Servant.

The Song of Songs is a love song expressing the beauty of covenant love in marriage. It gives life-giving insight into what God intended for human marriage, but it also reveals Christ as our Jealous Bridegroom.

Another book in the Old Testament wisdom literature, Ecclesiastes gives insight on Solomon’s search for meaning. Can we find fulfillment in this life? Christ is revealed as our Good Life.

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom from God. It points us to Christ as Our Wise Counselor.

The book of Psalms is a rich collection of songs that provide instruction and worship for believers. There are many images and pictures to draw from, but one way we see Christ revealed is as our Victorious King.

The book of Job is a well-known story of a man who experienced extreme suffering. In the end, he submitted to his sovereign God. We see Christ revealed as our Living Redeemer.

In the book of Esther, the Jews face the threat of certain death. But Esther intercedes to help provide relief & deliverance for God’s people. The story of Easter tells the same story, as Christ is revealed as our Sovereign Deliverer.

Like Ezra, Nehemiah brings a group of exiles back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city. While Ezra was focused on the temple and reforms among the people, Nehemiah led Israel to rebuild the city walls. In the book of Nehemiah, we see Christ as our Rebuilding Leader.

In the book of Ezra, God’s people return from exile and rebuild the temple. Ezra serves the people as a priest and scribe, pointing us toward Christ as our Devoted Priest.

The books of 1-2 Chronicles revisit the life of David and the righteous kings who followed in his ways. The temple also plays a role as the place of God’s presence amongst his people. Christ is revealed as our Glorious Temple.

The books of 1-2 Kings show us the downfall of the united kingdom of Israel under David and Solomon to the divided kingdom under many kings, many of whom were evil. Though God’s people are often unfaithful, God proves himself faithful. Christ is revealed as our Covenant Keeper.

The books of 1st-2nd Samuel transition us from the time of the judges to the era of the kings. During this time, Israel’s greatest king, David, rises to power. In his example, we see Christ revealed as our Compassionate King.

The book of Ruth tells the story of a Jewish mother, Naomi, and her Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth. They experience brokenness and loss, yet God provides for them through a kinsman-redeemer named Boaz. Christ is revealed in Ruth as our true and better kinsman-redeemer.

The book of Judges tell the story of Israel’s failure to follow the Lord, and the Lord’s provision of judges, or deliverers, who would save them. Judges reveals Christ as our Strong Deliverer.

The book of Joshua reveals Christ as our Conquering Warrior. He is the one who defeats our enemies and leads us into rest!

In Deuteronomy, Moses prepares the next generation of the children of Israel to enter the Promised Land. He promises them a future, greater prophet who would give them the words of God. Christ is revealed as our Great Prophet.

In Numbers, the sinful rebellion and wandering of God’s people is on full display. At the same time, we see God’s goodness and faithfulness. Here we see Christ revealed as our Merciful Healer.

In Leviticus, God reveals his holiness and his desire for us to be holy. We see Christ as our Atoning Sacrifice.
