Notes by Northwest

A somewhat truncated version, the first 45 minutes are lost forever, in a broadcast tradegy of epic proportion. 

This first passage, read by the author, Sequim resident Linda Carlson, describes in detail the types of people who settled in the company towns of the PNW, which were mostly created by logging and mining companies for their workers in remote areas of Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

Where did the term, Lumberjack breakfast originate?  In this passage from the book Company Towns of the Pacific NW, the author Linda Carlson tells of the meals served to the ravenous miners and lumberjacks who worked near and lived in company towns in the late 1800s into the 1900s.   Six eggs, a steak and pound of potatoes, anyone?

This reading from the chapter 40 Miles from Nowhere is from the book Company Towns of the Pacific NW.  The passage, read by the author and Sequim resident Linda Carlson, tells about the remote places where company towns sprung up and the challenges faced by those in residence there.  

Many of the towns that were started by mining or logging companies are still in existance today, a far cry from where they mostly were inhabited by brawny and sometimes ornery workers who scratched out a living in the remote areas of the PNW.   Thanks to author Linda Carlson for a fine piece of writing and for her excellent reading of four passages for this series. 

The first hour was dedicated to the songs of Woody Guthrie and his remarkable contributions to American music in honor of his birthday this week.. 

Happy Independence Day!  I played a bunch of new to me artists, including The Shaky Hands and Nick Delffs, in my never ending quest to feature new artists and songs on the show.

The typical melange of PNW music, including three selections from Nevermind , Nirvana's breakthrough 1991 release in the third hour.  I just finished reading the terrific biography of Kurt Cobain, Heavier Than Heaven and been on a Nirvana kick of late.  Great music, sad story, unhappy ending.

The third hour was dedicated to my father, starting with a song Old Man Inuit, by native artist Willie Thrasher--a song about the wisdom of our forebearers.   Happy Father's Day.

The first hour is all artists from Tacoma, the often maligned city that was actually a hotbed of great PNW talent.  And in the second and third hours, I played a bunch of new artists (new to the show at least) with a PNW connection.  

Another day in paradise, another show featuring music with a PNW connection.   You'll hear a terrifying (to me) mid show technical goof (by me) at the end of the second hour, but if you ignore that brief moment of freak out, you'll enjoy the rest of the show.   Community radio, overconfident people, and passion over process are a dangerous brew.  Enjoy.

And a few birthday shout outs to Willie Nelson (91), Will Worden (26), and my dad (88), with the song So Long, Astoria.  He was born (and left Astoria, NY) but the song is about the Oregon Astoria (both of which were named after John Jacob Astor).  Enjoy.

I kicked off the second hour with a Stones song--the PNW connection is that they rocked Lumen Field in Seattle this week.  Not too shabby for a bunch of 80 year olds.  The tour was sponsored by AARP.  No kidding.
