NOT FORGOTTEN: Stories of Utah's Dixie

Lyman sits down with Deborah Wirth who moved to St. George as a young mother, raised her children here, and connected to a community and a special spirit that have blessed her life. 

Lyman leads boyhood friends Bruce Hurst and Ashley Empey back 40 years to the 1986 World Series when Bruce went to the mound as the starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox in three games against the New York Mets. Then back 60 years to the time when these two boys became friends and played catch on the sandlots on the southern edge of St. George.

Lyman is joined by St. George's own Dalli Holyoake as she shares her deep Dixie roots and how her love of horses has led to her becoming one of the top cowgirls in America.

St. George auto dealer Stephen Wade shares the story of how his family "came to Dixie," and the difference that decision made in their lives.

Lyman is joined by Dixie College alums Bonnie Moore and Ernie Doose whose lives were changed by Roene DiFiore and the legendary institution she established known as Program Bureau. You'll want to listen all the way to the end, the very end.

Lyman recreates in the studio the talk he gave at the 40th Annual Juanita Brooks Lecture Series in the St. George Tabernacle on April 17, 2026. Incorporating memories of places and people in Utah's Dixie he expresses how a sense of place and a sense of story combine to form a sense of purpose. 

Lyman is joined by Gary Caldwell, conductor of St. George's Southwest Symphony for 26 years, current conductor Lucas Darger, and Debbie Hafen, who has played violin in the symphony for more than four decades. They share the story of this beloved institution that grew out of the Dixie Spirit.

Lyman circles back to the good old days of his youth sharing memories and writings about Boots Cox's Dairy, the old A&W, and Jim's Market.

Lyman welcomes Steve Hunt into the studio to talk about his hometown of Enterprise, its history, its unique qualities, what it was like to grow up there, and how the spirit of the community ties in to the Dixie Spirit.

Doris Andelin sits down with Lyman to talk about how she and her late husband Mike came to St. George in the mid-1970s and gave the town a new dining and design experience at a transitional time in this community's history.

Lyman is joined by retired advertising executive Brian Tenney who grew up in Southern Idaho but moved his young family to St. George in the 1980s where he reconnected with roots running deep into Dixie's red sand.

Carmen Iverson Snow joins Lyman for a walk down memory lane with stories about growing up in the town of Washington and a lifetime full of projects celebrating the history of Utah's Dixie.

Special guest Steven E. Snow joins Lyman to talk about the construction of two of St. George's most magnificent and beloved buildings: the St. George Temple and Tabernacle. They discuss how these structures miraculously came to be during a time of dire poverty in a community of little more than a thousand people.

Dr. Richard Whitehead and the renown sculptor Jerry Anderson sit down with Lyman to talk about the classic Dixie story of David and Wilhelmina Cannon, and how the intricate beauty of a sego lily changed their lives in early St. George. Jerry Anderson has sculpted a monument honoring these two pioneer settlers of Utah's Dixie.

Lyman is joined by Ted Spilsbury, his wife Vivian, and children Jody Spilsbury Snow and Brock, for a walk down memory lane in St. George and a look at the quintessential legacy of this Dixie family.

Mandy Mathis, daughter of Wally, sheds insightful light on her father’s legacy at Dixie High School, with some entertaining help from Wally’s fellow faculty members Jay Andrus and Doug Drake.

Lyman is joined by one of St. George’s great businessmen, Ken Newby, along with his son Grag, and daughters Lacy Franke and Lindsey Sullivan. They share their family story and what it means to be from Dixie.

Lyman is joined by Dale and Derrill Larkin, two brothers who embody the Dixie Spirit in amazing ways. They share stories of tragedy and joy growing up in the red sand of Dixie.

Lyman shares the heroic and tragic story of Wayne Gardner's death on the Arizona Strip during the snowy winter of 1949. He is joined by Wayne's daughter Katherine Gardner Staheli and her son Burke Staheli.

Marking the 50th Episode of the NOT FORGOTTEN Podcast, Lyman is joined by Marvel Lynn Booth Pace, and Kelly Pace, siblings of the late Dr. Craig Booth, to talk about their parents Fred and Marie Booth, what this place has meant to them, and what they have meant to this community.

Lyman is joined by Milt and Natalie Larsen, and Tammy Larsen Hullett, for a trip down memory lane. They share stories of the beloved, fun gathering spot in Utah's Dixie known as the Frostop, where people of all ages came together on the east end of St. George Boulevard for nearly 40 years.

Brothers Mark, Gawain, and Gary Wells are joined by their nephew Kyle Wells to talk about their pioneer roots in Utah’s Dixie and memories of working on the family dairy farm when they were boys.

Lyman tells the story originally shared with him by the late Nellie McArthur Gubler about her father, Moroni McArthur, who bravely and heroically saved Christmas in St. George, Utah, during the cold, hard winter of 1899. The episode also includes Christmas music arranged and produce by Ricky Valadez.

Lyman shares memories and stories about his beloved fourth grade teacher at East Elementary, who also became his high school English teacher at Dixie High. Mary Phoenix was an unconventional teacher who made a remarkable difference in his life.

Steve Wilson served as Administrator of Dixie Regional Medical Center from 1985 to 2006, perhaps the most pivotal years in the community’s health care history.
