The Lord Jesus Christ has saved those given to Him by the Father. He has saved us for eternity. Our eternal salvation ensures our present deliverance in this world in which we are kept by Christ and His Father and the Holy Ghost. Because we are saved eternally we shall be safe day by day.

The Lord Jesus Christ did not come into the world to save the world. He came to save His people and that is what He successfully accomplished. Here He tells His Father that He does not even pray for the world but for those who were given to Him in the covenant of grace to safeguard, protect and deliver from their sins,

The Lord Jesus Christ has authority over all flesh and gives eternal life to those whom the Father has given to Him to save. These blessed people are the chosen of God, the sanctified of the Spirit and the redeemed of Christ.

In John chapter 17 we embark upon one of the most remarkable and profound passages in the whole of Scripture. Every believer reading this chapter must surely feel they are standing on holy ground for the majesty of the subjects involved and the blessedness of those things requested from God by our Lord Jesus Christ.

All the words the Lord Jesus spoke were for our peace and comfort. He spoke of sins forgiven, redemption and reconciliation with God and eternal happiness in heaven. The gospel of Jesus Christ is cheering and comforting because the Lord Himself has accomplished all that is needed to secure its benefits for His people. He says, ‘I have overcome the world’.

The Lord was close to His arrest and crucifixion but He was also close to His resurrection. He knew that the disciples would be greatly vexed by the upcoming events so He encourages them with the promise of imminent and lasting joy, the joy of the Lord, to offset their sadness and sorrow.

The Holy Spirit's comforting work amongst God's people is here detailed by the Saviour as being of a reproving nature. It is the Holy Spirit who brings chosen sinners to salvation and to eternal life by convincing us of our sin, convincing us of our need of Christ's righteousness and convincing us that Christ's death on the cross has successfully delivered us from judgment.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is The Truth and all He says is true. He warns us of future troubles to prepare us for them. He tells us what is expedient and necessary for our salvation. He calls us to trust Him and lean on Him in all our ways.

Our union with the Lord Jesus Christ has gained us many blessings and benefits. By grace and the work of God we are a spiritual people, redeemed by blood and prepared for glory. We are not of this world but look for a city whose builder and maker is God.
