Movielife Crisis

Do you like scary movies? Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson made horror self-aware in 1996, and we're heading back to Woodsboro to see if Scream still cuts deep 30 years later. We get into the Drew Barrymore fake-out, Randy's rules, Matthew Lillard going fully unhinged, the killer reveal, and why not one adult in this town makes a good decision. Whatever you do, don't say "I'll be right back."

Edward Norton shows up in his very first movie role and takes the whole thing from Richard Gere's slick lawyer Martin Vail. Was there ever really a Roy? We won't spoil it, but we will argue about whether that ending makes the movie, and how anyone knew which VHS tape to grab.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: rewatch Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible with us and try to figure out what the hell is actually happening in that vault scene. Tom Cruise dangles, Jon Voight lurks, Jean Reno smokes, Ving Rhames types, and Emmanuelle Béart is up to something — we untangle the plot (allegedly), talk about how this launched a three-decade franchise on the back of on...

Is this the best bowling comedy in film history? Is it the ONLY bowling comedy in film history? Is it a worthy middle child to the Farrelly brothers' 90s run that starts Dumb and Dumber and after this goes to There's Something About Mary?

We revisit Jerry Maguire and try to figure out why it's still so endlessly rewatchable nearly three decades on. From the iconic setup and its surprising R-rated origins, to Cuba Gooding Jr.'s scene-stealing turn as Rod Tidwell, to the question of whether anyone but Tom Cruise could have carried this movie — we dig into the runtime debates, the awards legacy, and the deep bench of casting wins (Ren...

I know y'all remember the action comedy two-hander with Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans, right? RIGHT? Nah, I checked the box office numbers, only we remember it. But it's got good stuff happening! Really quotable and fun '96 deep cut.

John Travolta month continues with Broken Arrow, where he faces/off (get it?) against Christian Slater over some thermonuclear warheads. John Woo (WOOOOO!) directs, featuring Samantha Mathis, Howie Long, Delroy Lindo, and some other folks.

Something like a phenomenon.....no, wait, that's different. This is John Travolta playing an angel. No, wait, that's another 1996 movie. THIS one is John Travolta as a super genius in a small town with Kyra Sedgwick and Forrest Whittaker and Robert Duvall. Seriously it's kinda good.

Welcome to Earth! We've got the biggest movie of 1996, a cross between Top Gun, Alien, and Mad Max, featuring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Mary McDonnell, Vivica A. Fox, and way more.

GIVE ME BACK MY SON! Ok, Mel Gibson, we get it. Anyone else realize this and Payback are different movies?

Hey, you. Guy behind the guy? Get over here and talk about Swingers with us, because our baby's all growns up and he's all growns up.

What do you get when you combine Harold Ramis, Andie MacDowell, Eugene Levy, and four Michael Keatons? One of the most underrated and quotable comedies of the greatest comedy decade for movies.   Or maybe that's just us. Also, did you know what Michael Keaton's real name is?

Welcome to The Rock! An iconic 90s action movie from the maestro responsible for Bad Boys, Armageddon, Transformers: Michael Bay. With Nic Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris, and about a jillion other people.

Tim Burton and every 90s actor spoof 50s scifi films. Our host, zencastr, keeps eating these as I type them and now I'm too tired to make it interesting again.

Today we break down the most iconic 12 in fictional golf movies with writer/director Ron Shelton (Tin Cup, Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump). We learn how this is secretly a western, how Costner didn't want to do it, and how much of it is based on a real PGA pro who's actually in the movie!

Want to do heroin like a pro? Want to see lots of fecal matter flung about? Love thick scottish accents? THIS IS THE FILM FOR YOU. The revolutionary and actually kinda amazingly well made movie is this week on Movielife Crisis. We don't know why either.

Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, with Hank Azaria and Calista Flockhart coming at you from The Birdcage.  A wildly fun 90s comedy from the comedy duo Nichols and May that is still shockingly relevant today. This description is short and not good because zencastr failed 3x so I've re-written it a bunch and now I'm tired.

It's '96's top dark comedy from some of the funniest people in Hollywood. Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann, Janeane Garofalo, David Cross, and more! And yet it's mysteriously not that funny somehow. Come help us figure out how that happened!

An all-time underrated Rom Com from two of the greats: George "ER" Clooney and Michelle "Catwoman" Pfeiffer. This movie is beautifully written and directed and hits extra hard if you've got young kids, because those little a-holes will really jam up your free time. 😂

Geena Davis (Chefs do that!) with Samuel L. Jackson in the action/spy/thriller/comedy from Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2). Incredible dialogue and soundtrack from this nearly forgotten 90s movie, plus a weirdly complicated plot.

Larry Miller, Jada Pinkett, and seven Eddie Murphys + the director of Ace Ventura equals the biggest comedy of 1996.  Sit down, Jerry Lewis, it's Eddie Murphy. Hercules, Hercules, Hercules!

Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, and an incredible ensemble cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cary Elwes, Alan Ruck, and more. The movie that put flying CGI cows on the map, from the director of Speed (Jan De Bont). It's '96, let's go.  Support the show http://www.movielifecrisis.com <-- website http://www.patreon.com/movielifecrisis <-- bonus episodes + support the arts

Awards season is upon us. Best movies, top performances, most memorable music and quotes upon quotes. Plus ill-fitting sports jackets (video viewers know), and a quick '96 preview! Happy holidays from Jeff and JT and congrats to us for five years of 90s movies! Goofy, Max, and Tevin Campbell help us close out 1995 movies with this 78 minute animated music video from Disney Animation. Is it a timeless classic with incredible songs? I mean, nah. But it's still pretty fun. Plus announcements and '96 coming real soon! Remember when Gene Hackman, John Travolta, Rene Russo, Danny DeVito, James Gandolfini, Delroy Lindo, and about 15 more great actors all got together with Barry Sonnenfeld directing and did a wildly fun gangster action comedy that was funny and meta as heck?  We didn't either. But here it is -- Get Shorty! Support the show http://www.movielifecrisis.com <-- website http://www.patreon.com/mo...
