Putting a lot of time into the Stropes Foundation Archives and website. John (Stropes) and I spent a lot of time on a new post he prepared on Michael Hedges' "Because It's There", a very special work to me. I saw Michael play this on PBS on a concert called Live at Wolf Trap. All Windham Hill artists, at the height of the new age movement in the 80s. Most of it was not my...

Seattle drummer Wyatt Blancato sent me this through his manager Jacqui Gilroy - great timing, with just two Pokemon cards and a leg! Man. Link to the post.

The HX Effects is full of toys. It was 28 degree F last night, but still we see brain coral fungi on our walks. Link to the post.

Found this brief recording of Robert from C'mon C'mon times, 2007-9, somewhere in there. 'Funky Ass Robert Beat". Grafted a few changes onto it - I like the pace. Christmas lights through John and Susan's groovy 60s bathroom window. See you in the summer daddy-o. Link to the post.

Reunited with brother Robert and so many friends at John and Susan's tonight. Momentum for the C'mon C'mon reunion and second record is once again building thanks to this lovely man hitting town. So grateful for such good friends. There was a gig for the Degenerates at Sandpoint and there were a bunch of other things on the bill. Sometime in 2003. Somehow I raised my hand to prepare ba...

Medicine Hat at the Royal Room last was stellar. As last time around, much love from strangers who came out to tell us stories of shows of ours they saw 30 years ago. Reconnected with Dom from Blind Tribe as well. Such good times. Link to the post.

Another Medicine Hat speed test - this one was called Growth, this part my favorite riff. I dig the stop an start as always, and the speed makes me nod my head. Link to the post.

Lotsa noodling on old Medicine Hat songs. I liked this part of a tune we did, "Second Coming", but damn was it slow. I zhuzhed it up a bit and sped it up to 2x, and it sits with me nicely now. This notation has nothing to do with that. I had to post it though, for my sanity, so I could quickly find the corrected break in Breaking. Link to the post.

This post disappeared for some reason - just rewriting this on 10.5.2025. Medicine Hat rehearsing the 'Scott tune', maybe for inclusion in a set sometime soon. This is us at practice. Link to the post.

I've been listening to shortwave through on online sdr after reading about Alan Roe's guide to music on shortwave, and found some beautiful bits. A little remix of some more All India Radio. I put some new rock pickups in my G+L strat for Medicine Hat practices, which commence today for our show on the 18th. Link to the post.

I've been listening to shortwave through on online sdr after reading about Alan Roe's guide to music on shortwave, and found some beautiful bits. Dammmmmmmmmn. This is a broadcast from Korea according to the guide. Korean gutbucket groove. Really ends up heavy. I love this. Oh yeah, I was happy to receive the new versions of the Tri-Axium writings today. I posted in a few spots online and...

I've been listening to shortwave through on online sdr after reading about Alan Roe's guide to music on shortwave, and found some beautiful bits. This is from Voice of Turkey. So many intros like this end up stuck in my head and bounce around for a while, eventually spawning vairations that I end up writing down and turning into turns. There's a bucket of tunes that started off as (wha...

I've been listening to shortwave through on online sdr after reading about Alan Roe's guide to music on shortwave, and found some beautiful bits. I love how the lines and ornaments in the vocal are visible through this spectral view you see pictured here. T-shirt. Link to the post.

Getting ready for our second Medicine Hat show in the last 30 years, joining Chimestone once again at the Royal Room on January 18th. We may learn a new tune - I've been working on transcribing that all day, but the demo is too boring to post. I need to decorate it some more - maybe tomorrow. So this 'new' tune is captured from audio captured by my brother's (I think?) video camera...

Getting ready for our second Medicine Hat show in the last 30 years, joining Chimestone once again at the Royal Room on January 18th. I've been ironing out the bits that refuse to sit in my muscle memory - here's a collage of a few of them from Eleven. Link to the post.

This vocal line from a previous post has been looping in my head for weeks, gestating into something. This rhythm was a little bit tricky to notate (man I'm rusty) but feels real good to play. This is going to be a good one once there's some breathing room between these parts. Link to the post.

Over the Christmas break I've been building a greenhouse and listening to music, in particular getting reacquainted with R. Stevie Moore. I first found him trawling music collections in Napster (1998 I think would be the year), hearing from people that he was in a similar genre to Ween - another home recordist, DIY pop songwriter when there were few of them - relative to now. He's in a cla...

Two things pulled me back to my Anthony Braxton appreciation today: I scored a pristine vinyl copy of Anthony Braxton's For Alto and discovered Frog Peak had republished the long-promised, nicely-laid-out editions of the Tri-Axium writings. I made a commitment last year to begin sharing my study of these, and even made an unboxing video of the editions I received then, which got a lot of hits...

An unrealised Baby tune called Hispaniola. There was a section where we stopped playing and chanted 'in 14 hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. The hosts awaiting hardly knew, the hosts awaiting hardly knew." something like that. Some oblique commentary on imperialism from a bunch of middle class white kids. In my head, it gels nicely with the shortwave bollywood re...

Working with John on promotion for the upcoming Leo Kottke of transcriptions from his first album, 6 and 12 String Guitar, and I'm watching a video of a party with Leo, Joe Pass, John Williams, Paco Pena and a bunch of folks from Georgia, singing a beautiful group vocal thing. There are some lovely changes in there, and soon I will be able to share the audio! Pictured: words to live by, from a...

The dogs go wild as everyone hits the 52 degree water in Olalla. So worried we're all walking out to our deaths. My first new year's plunge. I might start doing this every week, I felt so good afterward. Link to the post.
