Mechanista in G

As the rare person who feels pretty cool on Hathaway 2 (and politely: no, I'm not looking for you to tell me why I'm wrong, I feel how I feel), these days in UC the stuff I enjoy the most is the games. I'm not about GQuuuuuuX , I ain't out here reading Wearwolf . So it's stuff like Code Fairy (god, that was five years ago) and yes, the original narrative parts of UC Engage that I find myself enjoy...

It's always funny to me when the Gundam Wiki goes out of its way to insist that something isn't canon. Like, sure. SD Gundam G Generation: Monoeye Gundams is not real. It didn't happen. But like... what did? You want me to believe that Unicorn happened and then just no one talked about the whole "this gundam can rewind time" thing? That Hathaway wasn't affected by any of that, at all? You're telli...

It can be difficult to make a mecha's design really stand out when it's almost purely an unarmed fighter. Certainly there are plenty of examples, especially in the world of super robots, but limiting yourself as the Gundam Build series does makes for a bit of a challenge. Broadly, the Denial Gundam is equal to the task, but it's still true that it arguably looks better in its variants where it has...

Everybody starts somewhere, and most beginnings are humble. And so there's nothing to be ashamed of with the furtive Newbatron, the starter mech from MechQuest . But you should maybe feel some sort of way about the state of your game's information resources. I want to know more and you are simply refusing to tell me. Dylan made a comment about how they know some creatures actually do "swim" through sand, but uh... is that true? I know there are some in video games, for example Monster Hunter, but I don't think I'm aware of any real world creatures that can do that. I would be curious to learn about them, though! It starts so promising. And hey, there are some winners near the end, too. But the middle is... well, a bit of a wasteland. It's probably because they tried to make so many combining toys. I don't know that ANYONE can make that look good. You can find a  video version  of this podcast for free on  Scanline Media’s Patreon ! It's always nice when we get to talk about Seed designs and just be... fairly positive? Because of course, we are usually harsh, because of our thoughts on that show and a lot of its designs. But I have no beef with the Murasame, a design whose restraint the rest of Seed could learn a lot from. Also no really, play Modded Marvel. Gamora and Gene from God Hand coming soon! We all know that magic and mecha aren't opposing concepts. They can totally play nice together. And mecha and girls? Can go great, for sure. Or very bad, we cannot endorse the behavior of Garalia from Dunbine . But what about both? Magical girls and mecha? Well, I haven't seen Granbelm yet. But I'm optimistic. I don't like the Ez-8. I don't like the Ground Gundam. I don't like the GM Ground Type. I don't like the Ez-SRs. But by the time we get to the FOXHOUND, by god, they've made it something I can enjoy. I am not even that much of an 08th MS Team hater! I don't like what that show's come to represent in the fandom, but it's fine. But damn, its mecha. Don't care for em. --I'm speaking as Six, I'm not s...

Our Gasaraki adventure continues! And concludes, I suspect. This show seems hella weird, especially in light of today's episode. I think I'm not in any rush to watch it. But these designs are fun to discuss, at least! You can find a  video version  of this podcast for free on  Scanline Media’s Patreon ! The thing is, both Tactical Armor and Metal Fake are great names. Tactical Armor is a really crisp genericism: you could use it in the rulebook for a mecha TTRPG and it would fit in very well as evocative shorthand for the general concept of mecha without being too bland. But then Metal Fake doesn't communicate the idea very well, but is just so rich with implication that it's fantastic. I think I...

Before he was the Meijin... he was just a dude. This week is an Obscure Tatsuya Yuuki Gunpla Special! That title's too long. Vrabe Battle Warriors? Amazing Pod Amazing? Pod Scramble Gundam? Whatever we call it, please enjoy the show. You can find a  video version  of this podcast for free on  Scanline Media’s Patreon ! It's only because of Chris we even saw any of these... perhaps it's a bit greedy to want more details. But we do all the same. This collection of weirdos from a forgotten tabletop game run the gamut from cool as hell to interesting but odd to... why.... And thank god we have an excellent guest to discuss them with. Thank you so much to Thom for joining us! You can find his main show Mobile Suit Br...

In a desperate attempt to both make sense of, and make a meal of, a request, we head down a peculiar rabbit hole. What happens when model makers are just asked to make… debris? Join us for an exploration of the Star Trek TNG episode "The Best of Both Worlds," and more specifcially, the wrecks in the background of its scenes. I wonder if this bizarre, forced bit of advertising worked on anyone. I wonder if anyone saw this gunpla and went "wow, that's true, I DO love Amazon." I guess it's more likely back then than it is now, because like all big American tech companies Amazon is really detested these days. Let this design call back to a simpler time. ...No, not the 00s, that wasn't a simpler time. I dunno, like 300 BCE...

So there's the Lfrith, and then there's the LFRITH. Y'know? I've been swayed by the argument that the XGF-01 and the XGF-02 represent entirely different trees of design- two houses, alike in dignity, or somesuch. So if you want the Aerial, and its predecessor the XGF-02 Lfrith? That's a different episode we'll do someday. Today, it's all about the 01, and its strange children. Two of them made all...

The age of the gunner is over, the age of the gunner has just begun. By listener request, Dylan and I dive into one of the most OG of machines in Gundam- the original Zeon tank, the Magella Attack. It... never achieves anything of note, besides perhaps being turned into a gun for a Zaku. But still, the Magella is foundational to Zeon design, and just a fun guy besides. Sometimes it's just one robot! That's ok. We all deserve a break sometimes. …Of course, we didn't take one, we just recorded a second ep immediately after this one, and I'll get that edited in the next day or two. But in theory we're allowed breaks! The Neodu is cool and I hope the next Build show, whenever that happens, gives us a fun variant of it. You can find a  video version  of this podcast...

I assume it's a portmanteau of "gallant" and "valiant?" Obviously neither of those have an E in them, but it's a language thing. In Japanese an E sound makes more sense there. All I have is my theories, because I've never seen this show, and I'm on the pod with two people who have a lot of thoughts about it. This is our ninth SD Gundam episode, and I've already made all the jokes or cute wordplay. And some of y'all are like "oh were those supposed to be clever, before?" so I'm REALLY on thin ice. What I'll say then is that there's a real shortage of documentation of our final unit in this ep, and I am proud of us for being the ones to step up and do the work when others aren't. You can find a  video v...

Don't get a big head, folks. It just makes for a bigger target. Unless it's sufficiently up-armored, in which case maybe it's fine? Then again, I believe the "Danger Melon" that we're discussing today ended up in a fight against Chirico Cuvie, and such fights kinda only go the one way. But don't spoil for me, I don't actually know the answer to how it went! I guess it's POSSIBLE someone beat Chiri...

Gundam 00's Human Reform League are not about flashy designs. They're very utilitarian. And y'know? Of the three factions, they're the only ones who get CLOSE to achieving something against Celestial Being on their own. Perhaps that practicality really makes a difference. The (Part 1) up there is a combination of my inherent anxiety-driven pedantry and a bit of a goof. I... don't think we'll ever do more Star-vaders. We probably shouldn't have done them in the first place. I goofed. But you never know, and so I feel the need to leave room. But in so doing, it's also like putting a gun on the table. It's a threat. We can always do more Star-vaders if I decide to be...

As far as angels go, this one appears to be willing to lend its wings to the devil. ...Cuz it's like the "throne" class of angels? Yeah idk I was hoping it would sound cool, but I think it's a bit too tryhard. But doesn't that just mean Michael Trinity would appreciate it? That boy was one hell of an edgelord. You can find a  video version  of this podcast for free on  Scanline Media’s Patreon ! I...

In fairness, the first half of the episode IS cleanup. It's only after the initial set that I just start making Dylan look at random mobile suits we haven't covered. I suppose in theory I'm spoiling an eventual Gundam Eight episode, but c'mon. It's more fun this way. You can find a  video version  of this podcast for free on  Scanline Media’s Patreon !
