Manners & Madness: A Jane Austen & David Lynch Podcast

This week we are getting obscure and covering On the Air, the show David Lynch and Mark Frost created right after Twin Peaks. Only 2 -3 episodes were ever aired but we are covering the full 7 episodes that were recorded. It’s a sitcom, it’s strange, and we have a lot of thoughts.

This week we wrap up Emma 1972, and we really liked this one. Maybe our favorite Knightly, a great Emma, and surprisingly funny.

This week we are starting yet another Emma adaptation. This is a BBC adaptation from 1972. Just because something is older doesn’t make it worse and we have a lot to praise from the first three episodes.

This week we are truly checking-in and reviewing everything we’ve covered recently as well as talking about all our latest interests and obsessions. We end the episode with a rousing game of would you rather.

This week we have our final movie in this section, Lucky. It’s another acting role from David Lynch but it’s really Harry Dean Stanton who carries the movie is a lovely sendoff to a great actor.

This week we are watching Miss Austen Regrets, another biopic, this time covering the end of Jane Austen’s life.

This week we try to learn more about Jane Austen herself and watch the first of two biopics we have on the docket, Becoming Jane. Focusing on her early life and heavily romance oriented, we found the movie lacking overall.

This week we were running behind and so decided to forgo our scheduled recording for a quick check-in. We catch-up on what we have been up to and take a breather before we come back next week with a regular episode.

This week we are watching a movie that features David Lynch as an actor. The Fablemans is by Steven Spielberg and is about his life. David Lynch makes a cameo at the end as legendary director John Ford and is delightfully iconic.

This week we are covering our second Whit Stillman movie, his first, Metropolitan. This movie is listed as a modern adaptation of Mansfield Park even though it really isn’t. It does however talk about the novel and works with some of its themes, which leads to us having a lot to talk about.

This week we finally follow through on our threats and add Tim Curry to the Manners & Madness line-up. We begin with one of his funniest the farcical cult classic Clue.

This week we finish our coverage of Lost Highway. We spend a good amount of the episode speculating on what it all means, how much is real and where it fits in with the recurring themes of David Lynch’s work.

This week we are on to one of David Lynch’s seminal movies, Lost Highway. A movie about memory and murder, where every character and even the film itself seems to be divided and doubled at the same time. We get into the spirit by dividing our coverage into two parts so be sure to come back next week for more.

We talk about what story lines are featured and how it stacks up compared to others we have watched.

This week we are covering David Lynch’s 2006 book, Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness & Creativity. It is an exploration of Lynch’s thoughts on his life, work creativity, and how Transcendental Meditation has shaped him.

This week we put our podcasting hats back on and talk about what is to come this year. We also talk movies and TV we’ve been watching and how 2024 has been treating us so far.
