Who is Driving the Economic Car? 31.10.2022 12:12
People are cyclical. The economy is cyclical. It’s something I’ve continuously repeated to myself the past few weeks as I’ve been traveling. I had a conversation with my Uber driver about the current state of affairs, and he asked me - “how could you be so jaded to choose money over people” when I was explaining the well-that’s-just-how-it-is-ism of the Federal Reserve. I did a piece for Bloomberg...
The Fed’s Goal? Getting the Economy on a Sustainable Path 21.10.2022 20:20
I had the incredible opportunity to interview Mary Daly, the President and CEO of the San Francisco Federal Reserve. As we all know, the Federal Reserve is raising rates, shrinking their balance sheet in order to fight inflation - but there are increasing concerns over the consequences that those policy decisions have. People are the economy. The economy is just a bunch of people “peopling” around...

Why The Fed Wants a Weaker Jobs Market 04.10.2022 5:34
Today we got the latest JOLTS report - Job openings fell 1.1 million in August to 10.1 million. The drop in job openings last month (-1,117,000) is larger than the drop in job openings in March 2020 (-1,087,000). However, the Fed is unlikely to pivot - "Tighter monetary policy has begun to cool demand and reduce inflationary pressures, but our job is not yet done. It will take time, but I am fully...

The Federal Reserve's Inflation Battle 21.09.2022 3:46
The Fed raised rates by 75 bps today in order to battle inflation. They're likely going to keep on raising rates. They're going restrictive mode, nearing that meaning that they're willing to take on quite a bit of economic weakness in order to slow the economy down, which is their way of managing inflation.

Everyone is Impacted by the Energy Crisis 07.09.2022 12:29
There’s an energy crisis going on. I am going to talk about how we got here, what’s going on right now, and some ideas for what the future could look like. As always, I try to remove all sensationalism in my work, so if you’re looking for straightforward analysis and synthesis on this situation, that’s what this is. Quiet Quitting is Actually Quite Loud 29.08.2022 10:30
I truly think the Fed is doing the best they can with the tools that they do have - but as I and many others have written about before, their best might not be good enough here. I think using the labor market as a tool is of course an economic necessity for what they can do - but it’s a tool that has long lasting morale consequences and enhances distrust in a world that is increasingly losing trus...
How Sensationalism Drives the Stock Market 22.08.2022 11:29
There is a gap between expectations and reality, which creates the perfect storm for Very Big Takes. Supply side information issues compounded by ‘printing’ too many takes has created a hypertakeflationary environment. full piece: https://kyla.substack.com/p/hypertake... The Inflation Narrative 15.08.2022 9:05
Inflation being 0% in July doesn’t diminish that pain and worry that so many are experiencing. There is still a long way to go. But even marginal improvements can tip the dominoes in a better direction - which should help shape expectations to be more positive, and the compounding impact of that is a good thing. How Social Media Drives the Economy 08.08.2022 7:46
The algorithmic money faucet does not like detail, but that is what this economy *requires*. Things are bad, things are good, and it’s important to understand where and why both are happening versus saying that Everything is Actually Hell. Nuance is required, especially as we navigate the next few months of a Fast and Furious Fed, who is hellbent on fighting inflation. The way that we think abou...
The Semantics of a Recession 01.08.2022 17:03
Grief and love are the same emotion, expressed differently. We are living in a world of increasing differentials, where our base case is becoming less probable, and we are having to build out new models of thinking. That is exciting but scary - we might be all experiencing the derivative of the ‘same thing’ as our economic world changes around us but it shows up for all us differently. And that is...

Investing in an Inflationary Environment 15.07.2022 22:37
Note: the interview was filmed in April 2022 so some dynamics have changed, but the core interview applies even more now than it did then I got the chance to interview Don Casturo, the CIO of Quantix Commodities. We discussed commodities, and how you can hedge against inflation in your own portfolio. This video is in partnership with Harbor Capital Blog: https://kyla.substack.com Linkedin: https:...

Jobs in Finance Explained | A Guide 08.07.2022 11:27
There are a lot of avenues in finance, including taking the CFA and other credentialing exams. Basically, if you are handling other people’s money, you’re going to have to take some sort of test to prove that you can do it. The good thing about that though is that a lot of these tests have lateral moves - you get to learn about the nuances of the entire industry which can help if you choose to pur...
