Exsurgat Deus - Holy Face Antiphon 26.07.2025 6:22
I’m still figuring out how to work substack into how I put things together. Back at my first website, Brandt Lab, I have space to keep the source files for any PDFs I put together, and substack doesn’t seem to have a similar way to keep them, so here’s the link to the Brandt Lab article: The idea for this video comes from a Holy Face devotee who asked how to sing a particular chant. She sent the p...
Slavonic Sub Tuum 17.07.2025 1:30
This piece seems to have been put together by Dominican nuns from Our Lady of the Rosary Monastery, Summit, New Jersey. In 1983 they released the Summit Choirbook, which I don’t have a copy of, but I think a photocopy from the book ended up circulating in choir circles around Sydney in Australia. The words are the oldest Marian Antiphon. Here’s a translation: We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mothe...
Office of the Dead: Matins, third nocturn (Wed, Sat) 22.04.2025 25:41
A recording which has been sitting on an SD card for a while. Booklets and further recordings available at dead.brandt.id.au When singing this, I was reading from the Liber Usualis, so the tunes for the readings don't match up very well, but if you can notice the difference, then you probably have skills enough to sing it yourself. Which is a very good thing to do. This is a public episode. If...

Astra quae terram - Gregorian chant hymn to St Philomena in Latin 15.08.2022 3:01
It was St Philomena's feast day 12 August. Someone requested me to sing a hymn to St Philomena in Latin. Sure enough there was a thread on the Musica Sacra forum about chant hymns for St Philomena and you can read the rest of the story, and download the PDF on my website: https://www.kidschant.com/post/st-philomena/ This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers...

Day 99 of #100daysofchant Da pacem Domine, in diebus nostris. Quia non est aliud qui pugnet pro nobis nisi tu Deus noster. Virgo Dei Genitrix - the short hymn to Our Lady with the most elisions 09.08.2022 1:21
Day 98 of #100daysofchant 1. Virgo Dei Genitrix, quem totus non capit orbis: In tua se clausit viscera factus homo. 1. O Virgin Mother of God, He Whom the whole world does not contain, enclosed Himself in thy womb, being made man. 2. Vera fides Geniti purgavit crimina mundi, Et tibi virginitas inviolata manet. 2. True faith in thy begotten Son has cast out the sins of the world, and for thee virgi...

O Salutaris Hostia - O saving Victim - penultimate verse of Verbum Supernum 06.08.2022 1:58
Day 95 of #100daysofchant Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is one of those old devotions that sometimes gets taken for granted, but seems to be a bit rarer than it should be. For learning the words, see this interactive page at Kids Chant: https://www.kidschant.com/course/benediction/o-salutaris/ or this more mundane page: https://newbookoldhymns.brandt.id.au/hymns/osalutaris.html This is a pu...
Little Office BVM Compline in Gregorian Chant with updated Psalm Tone 05.08.2022 10:08
Day 94 of #100daysofchant So close to finishing! For anyone new, I have been working on a course teaching people how to Sing the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Latin since 2020. Recently someone asked about the Psalm tone I was using for Compline compared with page 158 of the Baronius Press book, so I made a technical video exploring what was going on there - you'll have to get the c...

Day 93 of #100daysofchant The Introit for the feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (6 August) ILLUXÉRUNT coruscatiónes, tuæ orbi terræ: commota est, et contrémuit terra. Ps. Quam dilécta tabernácula tua, Dómine virtútum! concupíscit, et déficit anima mea in atria Dómini. Gloria Patri. Thy lightnings enlightened the world: the earth shook and trembled. Ps. How lovely are Thy tabernacles, O Lor...

Vexilla Regis - Abroad the regal banners fly - Gregorian chant - sonorous Passiontide meditation 01.08.2022 3:23
Day 90 of #100daysofchant We sang this as an intermission procession for a production of The Man Born to Be King at the Great Hall in Sydney University. That was my introduction to it. The whole audience processed out after the Crucifixion, giving the stage crew time to change the set. More Info: https://newbookoldhymns.brandt.id.au/hymns/vexilla.html This is a public episode. If you would like t...
Sacris Solemniis - cool hymn to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament 31.07.2022 3:42

Salve Festa Dies - Cool chorus, tricky verses - Easter procession hymn - Hail festival day! 30.07.2022 4:10
Day 88 of #100daysofchant You guys probably all go to the Easter Vigil and sleep in on Easter Sunday, don't you? Well, some really cool stuff happens while you guys are all sleeping. Easter Sunday has this little known optional procession. Do you need a translation here when the words are in the video? Way back when I put A New Book of Old Hymns together, I could not find a translation anywhere....
Ubi Caritas est vera (with one slip into "et amor") Gregorian Chant 29.07.2022 2:46
Day 87 of #100daysofchant I went with the "est vera" version thinking that it would be the better version as the new books were using it - like the way some of the Pre-Urbanite versions of hymns were being revived. Unfortunately, this isn't the way most of the groups I sing with sing it. "Ubi caritas et amor" is pretty entrenched. If I ever get around to the new version of A New Book of Old Hymns...
Stabat Mater - the easy hymn version - Our Lady of Sorrows by the Cross 28.07.2022 4:22
Day 86 of #100daysofchant This one's a classic hymn to accompany the Stations of the Cross. The Latin is so brief and concise and beautiful. There's also a Sequence version with a bit more variety to the tune, but when I put together A New Book of Old Hymns, this simpler one was the only one I knew. For more info see: https://newbookoldhymns.brandt.id.au/hymns/stabatmater.html This is a public epi...
Crux Fidelis - Faithful Cross - the 1962 Liber Usualis version 27.07.2022 8:39
Day 85 of #100daysofchant I love how the chorus repeats in two parts. Keeps you awake figuring out which chorus comes next. Also makes it a bit more interesting to sing along the chorus. And it is beautiful - recounting the story of Redemption from Eden to Bethlehem to the Upper Room to Calvary to Heaven. More info at: https://newbookoldhymns.brandt.id.au/hymns/cruxfidelis.html Crux fidelis,...
Pange Lingua - sing my tongue - Benediction Hymn by Thomas Aquinas 26.07.2022 3:01
Day 84 of #100daysofchant You know this one, don't you? There's a bit more information here (along with a crossword puzzle to test your vocabulary skillz): https://newbookoldhymns.brandt.id.au/hymns/pangelingua.html This is a public episode.
