In this passage, the writer of Proverbs wants to both encourage and warn his readers to take heed of his words lest they fall into destruction.  In our own strength we are insufficient for the challenges of the day.  How do we walk in wisdom as we follow Jesus in the world?

Today we begin our series in Proverbs: The Sayings of Summer .  Over the next several weeks, we'll study the first few chapters of the book in order to better apply the wisdom of God to our daily lives.

In this message, LMBC Elder Tony Steffee addresses an ever-present challenge of Christian discipleship.  What do I do when I DON'T desire to follow Christ?  A disciple must be on guard against the deceitfulness of sin and see that the Gospel really is our only hope.

Listen as LMBC Elder Justin Koon leads us through Matthew Chapter 8.  In this passage, Jesus shares the true cost of following Him.  A disciple follows Jesus even though it is costly , and a disciple follows Jesus above anything else .

Jesus' healing of a blind man in John 9 provides a miraculous Portrait of Discipleship.  ​To be a disciple of Jesus is to be with Jesus, be changed by Jesus, and be sent by Jesus.

Today we introduce our new series, Portraits of Discipleship. Matthew 4 defines a disciple as one who is following Jesus, being changed by Jesus, and on mission with Him.

Paul concludes his letter with a few final instructions to the Colossian church.  After his final instructions, Paul also extends personal greetings to those in the church and those who are aiding the church. In these instructions and greetings, we can find great encouragement for our own lives and church today.

In this passage, Paul addresses the God-given roles in a Christ-centered home. When Christ is at the center of our homes, our families will thrive within His good design. 

In the verses that we read today, Paul calls the church at Colossae to “put off” old sinful habits and patterns they wore before they knew Christ and to “put on” new works that are befitting of their salvation. What are we called to “put off” and “put on” as those who have been raised to new life in Christ?

At the end of chapter 2 and the beginning of chapter 3, Paul addresses how the believers in Colossae have gone from insiders to outsiders—from residents to exiles—and how they should live in light of that transformation. Just like this church, we are tempted to conform to the values and idols of a secular society. The gospel, however, both frees us from fear and empowers us to live on mission.

In the last half of the chapter, Paul wants to get specific about the teachings that sought to take the Colossians captive and keep them from walking in faith.  What are the things Paul is concerned about? How do we protect ourselves from enslavement to these substitute gospels that are not truly gospels at all?

Verses 6 and 7 of Colossians 2 operate as the synopsis of the entire book and capture the heart of the letter. Paul’s desire is that just as the church at Colossae had received Jesus as Lord, they would continue to “walk in him”

Today we celebrate the victory of Jesus Christ over the grave! The resurrection is the foundation of our faith, assurance of our forgiveness, and hope beyond this life.

As we enter the passion week, where we reflect on the life but specifically the death and resurrection of Jesus, let's pause this morning and consider the heart and work of Christ towards sinners and sufferers. The miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead gives us wonderful insight into the heart of our Savior.

Why do we baptize? Why do we, as a church, take this sacrament so seriously? In today's message, we'll study 3 essential truths about the act of Baptism. 

In our passage this morning we can be reminded both of the cost of gospel ministry and of the responsibility all believers share in spreading the hope of the gospel to our neighbors and the nations. As a church committed to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, we must be ready to steward the gospel to serve others in the face of suffering.

In this passage, Paul wants to remind the church at Colossae of what Christ has done on their behalf, and why he has done it. So that, as they reflect on the past work of redemption and the future work of restoration, they would walk faithfully in the present.

The whole of creation groans under the weight of brokenness and sin. We know this and experience it each day. In our passage this morning, Paul wants to show that not only is Jesus Lord over all creation, but he is also Lord over its redemption—that the answer to a sinful, broken creation is the one through whom, by whom, and for whom it was created.

At the time the Epistle to the Colossians was written, false teachers had crept into the church at Colossae—going so far as to deny the divinity of Christ. In these three verses, Paul affirms the authentic Jesus as the one who holds all things together.

Today as we continue in Colossians 1, we'll observe 3 distinguishing marks of the Church.  As God’s people, we are to be grateful for our salvation, going with the Gospel, and growing in our Christlikeness. 

The letter of Colossians is a letter to a young church, in a dying city, that has been inundated with pressure to compromise the truth of the gospel they had received.  What can we learn from this letter? How can we apply the message of Colossians to our own church and lives?

As we complete our "Made New" series this morning, we'll study the practical response to sin in the life of the Christian.  No Christian, no matter how long they’ve believed, will be perfected in this life. We must practice the promise and power of new life by fighting sin and living in obedience to Christ.

If we are to ever truly be a church committed to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, it will only be built on the truth that every human life matters to God and is precious in his sight. We cannot claim to love and serve God and not love and serve those made in his image—especially the lost, the least, and the lowly.
