KZOO POETRY SLAM-CAST

Karrie Waarala is the master of ceremonies for the first night of the 3 rd annual Kzoo Summer Slam. Poets from Chicago, Ann Arbor, Minneapolis, and New York (Dawn Saylor) journey to Kalamazoo for two hot summer nights of poetry shenanigans.

I’m still searching the archives for the other half of this recording but for now, we’ve got the open-mic hosted by Kzoo’s own Dan Stevens, and a little taste of California slam poet Derrik Brown.

This “no poetry” edition of the Kzoo Slam-Cast was recorded in March of 2003, and features special musical guest, Sista Otis & the Wholly Rollers.

It’s a feature double feature, no open-mic, no poetry slam, just two feature performances back to back. From his feature performance at the Kzoo Poetry Slam in September of 2002, Morris Stegosaurus . . . followed by singer songwriter Hailey Wojcik from her feature in 2005.

In the third and final installment of Dawn’s bon voyage party you’ll hear tribute poems from Xen and Drach, a few more poems from the feature Kathryn Zwick, a special farewell performance from Brook Pridemore, and National Poetry Slam Champ, the great and powerful Becky Austin.

In August of 2002, three time Kzoo Slam Team member and two time Def Poet, Dawn Saylor left Kalamazoo for New York. Kzoo Poets said their goodbyes by covering their favorite Dawn Saylor poems. Part two includes: Greg Bliss, Sarah Lawrence (aka Sarah V.), Miss Kitty, Dan Stevens and Kathryn Zwick.

Team Kzoo and team Grand Rapids get together to showcase the multi-voice poems that they’ve been working on in preparation for the 2001 National Poetry Slam in Seatle. Plus some open-mic and a couple bonus music tracks.

Buddy Wakefield, “three time world champion and most toured performance poet in history,” returns to Kzoo for a third time. 

Another time skip back to the summer of 2001 (before the creation of the Midwest Poetry Slam League) when poets from Chicago, Detroit, Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids came to town. Featuring music from Charlie Burgess and Brook Pridemore.

It’s another oopsy in the timeline, as we spring forward to this 2003 M.P.S.L. bout between Kzoo, Ann Arbor and Columbus.
