Just Another Animal

Science EN ↓ 7 episodes

Are you able to move? Do you have to eat food? Can you sexually reproduce? Is your body made up of multiple cells with a nucleus? Do you have a nervous system? If this sounds like you, congratulations! You're just another animal. Our species history starts at least 300 Kya, most likely in the Congolian forest-savannas. We're a monkey from Africa that can climb trees for fruit and partake in social grooming, but something's a bit... off. Unlike other primates, we can only walk on two legs, and most of our hair is thin with little melanin. Lean in and listen to learn about our place in nature.

For humans in WEIRD societies, it’s called attachment parenting. For other mammals, it’s just regular ol’ parenting. Should us and chimps be in the same genus? I’d say, “duh!” In this episode, I discuss what differentiates primates from other animals. Are you a baby-talking naked ape? 07.02.2026

We are monkeys. We aren’t naked apes. Humans ain’t so special. And please, stop talking to other animals like you do to your toddler! Find out several lil tidbits that’ve been rollin’ around in my mind. The picture is of a female mountain gorilla with her baby in Rwanda. Photo taken by Charles J. Sharp.

Mammals and Mammaries 01.02.2026

Learn about what a mammal is, and how humans fit into that group of animals. You’ll also hear about hair and mammary glands, which includes my strong thoughts on these topics. The picture is of a person from one of the Bayaka foraging groups in the Congolian rainforest. Photo taken by JMGRACIA100.
