THE CROWD (1928) - What Is Love? Baby Don't Hurt Me... 01.05.2023 36:21
The life of a man and woman together in a large, impersonal metropolis through their hopes, struggles, and downfalls. I LOVED this movie. Ugh. It's just beautifully done, and that's all I can really say. It's a film about a romance struggling to survive in a crazy world where all you have to worry about is trying to get enough money at work. Incredible performances from the leads and the CINEMATOG...
EUROPE '51 (1952) - Ingrid Bergman, OMG You Are a Saint (Also, Happy 25th Episode!!!) 26.04.2023 46:57
25 episodes so far!! WOO WOO!!!! This has been so much fun. Thank you all for tuning in and managing to keep up with my loud, obnoxious voice and incessant double entendre jokes. In EUROPE' 51 , a wealthy woman becomes obsessed with humanitarianism when her young son dies after committing suicide. Although things get a little redundant near the third act, Roberto Rosselini's timely drama is saved...
INTOLERANCE (1916) - Babylon 2 21.04.2023 39:31
Responding to criticisms of racism for his record-breaking THE BIRTH OF A NATION , filmmaking pioneer D.W. Griffith made this epic drama depicting intolerance through the ages. INTOLERANCE , a film nearly three hours in length, is positively astounding in size and scope. Did I understand each of the four stories? NOT AT ALL, but you know what? I stuck through it and pleasantly enjoyed this EPIC of...
STAR WARS: EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE (1977) - May the Force Penetrate You 19.04.2023 41:47
Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader. STAR WARS is an underrated hit that I wish more people have heard of. It's unfair how little people know about it..... JK! It's STAR WARS, people. What do I think...
CRIES & WHISPERS (1972) - Suffering....So Much Suffering 17.04.2023 40:56
When a woman dying of cancer in early twentieth-century Sweden is visited by her two sisters, long-repressed feelings between the siblings rise to the surface. Ingmar Bergman's film is one of the most haunting works of cinematic art you'll ever see. The colors. The performances. The cinematography. WOW. HARLAN COUNTY U.S.A. (1976) - No Justice, No Peace 14.04.2023 36:52
A heartbreaking record of the thirteen-month struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line. I LOVED this movie. Barbara Kopple's documentary is a testament to the working class. It's a movie that is meant to get you mad. Relevant and timely, it's simply incredible. THE LAST LAUGH (1924) - #DontBeAgeist! 12.04.2023 39:09
An aging doorman is forced to face the scorn of his friends, neighbors and society after being fired from his prestigious job at a luxurious hotel. F.W. Murnau's silent masterpiece is an extraordinarily early example of how to use a video camera. It's just WOW. The shots. The cinematography. The angles. I loved it. CLIP: https://youtu.be/Da6U9FOvzmY
TASTE OF CHERRY (1997) - Eek Just Don't Get in the Car with Strangers EVER 07.04.2023 35:57
*TRIGGER WARNING* This film and episode touch on some sensitive topics. Just FYI. If you're ever lonely, talk to someone. Get some help. In TASTE OF CHERRY , an Iranian man drives his car in search of someone who will quietly bury him under a cherry tree after he commits suicide. Believe it or not, this was my FIRST Abbas Kiarostami movie I've ever seen. Although I had a few issues with it, this i...
IN VANDA'S ROOM (2000) - Oh No, Oh No, Oh No No No No No..... 03.04.2023 35:13
The film follows the daily life of Vanda Duarte, a heroin addict in Lisbon, and the community she lives in. Everyone, I have an announcement to make: this is the first movie I HATED. Ugh. I know, I hate being mean and I'm not trying to be, but.....just no. Look, everyone can make their own art their own way. This one just wasn't for me. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/OMtsdwWSjyk
MORVERN CALLAR (2002) - 1-800 Don't Act Like Morvern 31.03.2023 34:55
Samantha Morton plays the enigmatic title character in Lynne Ramsay’s dreamy and atmospheric road movie. Ramsay is like the QUEEN of making dark, incredibly morbid and hypnotic movies. MORVERN CALLAR is an astounding motion picture of a woman with no morals. No boundaries. No ethics. Her moral compass is more than skewed. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/oZ-13OskDDg WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN Trailer: h...
THE INTRUDER (2004) - Abstraction, Dogs, Kitchen Sex, and.....More Dogs 29.03.2023 34:33
An emotionally cold man leaves the safety of his Alpine home to seek a heart transplant and an estranged son. This is....a head-scratcher, a head-scratcher so itchy that I nearly tore through my skin. Claire Denis is an AMAZING filmmaker, but this one just wasn't for me, BUT I highly recommend her other movies. Story about director Apichatpong Weerasethakul's parents, who were both doctors, and the director's memories about growing up in the hospital environment. NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT (2010) - Across the Universeeeeeeeeee 24.03.2023 37:34
A documentary about two different searches conducted in the Chilean Atacama Desert: one by astronomers looking for answers about the history of the cosmos, and one by women looking for the remains of loved ones killed by Pinochet's regime. Patricio Guzmán has made a heavy but astounding film about a lot of things. The past. Heartbreak. The universe. The origins of man. I'm too tired to try to expl...
DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES (1988) - Don't Keep Singing, Don't Keep Singing.... 22.03.2023 37:10
Post-war working-class Liverpool life is impressionistically evoked in Terence Davies’ two-part film, by turns lyrical, humorous and horrific. Oy vey. This movie. UGH, it's gorgeous to look at and features a typically OUTSTANDING performance by the late great Pete Postlethwaite, but the singing..... The singing..... THE SINGING. No more. PLEASE. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/IdlslMb3KJY THE DEEP BLUE...
SOLEIL Ô (OH, SUN) (1967) - A Giant Middle Finger to Racists Everywhere 20.03.2023 37:03
A vibrant humanist statement on racism and immigration that remains pertinent today. Med Hondo's wild, absurd, oftentimes funny, incredibly tragic experimental drama about a group of Mauritanian immigrants trying to live their days in Paris does its job: it gets you MAD. Its power lies in how all these years later, nothing has changed. LEARN MORE ABOUT SOLEIL Ô: https://www.criterion.com/films/302...
POSSESSION (1981) - Just Don't Get Divorced EVER..... 17.03.2023 45:28
Andrzej Zulawski’s out-of-control horror is a bare-souled account of a broken relationship. POSSESSION is a reminder to just never break up or else you'll go totally wacko and then begin having sex with a tentacle-like creature and actually, I'm serious. Just when I think horror films can't get any stranger, they do! TRAILER: https://youtu.be/aLXW-oVbTxE INTERVIEW WITH ANDRZEJ ZULAWSKI: https://yo...
VIDEODROME (1983) - Butts in Stomachs.... 15.03.2023 46:22
James Woods and Debbie Harry star in David Cronenberg’s mind-melting sci-fi about media domination. Cronenberg puts the WTF in W. T. F. F. (fu**ing fu*k). VIDEODROME, like so many of his other body horror/political flicks, is a masterpiece. First watch it for the visuals, then watch it for the meaning. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/wFRAwig4rU8 A VISION OF THE FUTURE: ON DAVID CRONENBERG'S VIDEODROME:...
A CANTERBURY TALE (1944) - Catch That Damn Glue-Man... 13.03.2023 38:36
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s tale of the mysterious ‘glue man’ is one of their most gently moving films. This is a beautifully shot motion picture with an absurd plot, and yet.....ehh. I'm "eh" about it. SCENE FROM A CANTERBURY TALE: https://youtu.be/Dj4r-j4VBWs
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971) - I Was Cured All Right..... 10.03.2023 50:11
A dystopian future London is the playground of a teenage gang leader in Stanley Kubrick’s stylish, controversial take on Anthony Burgess’s novel about violence and free will. Duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh!!!! (That's me humming Beethoven music.) GUYS. THIS MOVIE. UGHHHHHHH. Yes, it's disturbing and so vile, but also brilliant, ingenious, hilarious, bizarre, bat-sh*t, etc. Literal...
MOUCHETTE (1967) - The Happiest Movie of All Time.... (No) 08.03.2023 36:08
Robert Bresson’s moving chronicle of 24 hours in the life of a neglected and abused teenage girl. OK, OK, yes. This is a VERY depressing movie. Depressing and grim, but utterly captivating from the first shot to the last. It's a movie about what happens when society fails you. What do you become? Deep, deep, VERY artsy movie, but I loved it. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/j9HXcsE0gI8 BUT MATT, I WATCHE...
MY DARLING CLEMENTINE (1946) - Henry Fonda, You Impeccable GOD. 06.03.2023 39:19
Wyatt Earp tames Tombstone in John Ford’s stirring, poetic and visually stunning western. This was a MASTERPIECE, a real human drama with real characters. There's some action for you, but Ford doesn't overdo it with the spectacle. Also, you guys, HENRY FREAKIN' FONDA. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/9K8aLxXSyVY
EARTH (1930) - Lions & Tigers & Bears & Collectivization, Oh My! 03.03.2023 35:19
Commissioned to make propaganda for Stalin’s farm collectivizations, the Soviet cinema’s great visual poet Alexander Dovzhenko instead delivered an impassioned hymn to nature. There's a lot of historical context you need to know about before watching EARTH, but once you know it, DAMN. What a beautifully told, visually sumptuous film from the silent era. EARTH Opening Scene: https://youtu.be/XkPen4...
ANNIE HALL (1977) - DIANE. FREAKIN'. KEATON. Marry Me, Please. 01.03.2023 36:55
Woody Allen’s breakthrough as a ‘serious’ filmmaker is a sublimely funny romantic comedy about an anxious comedian’s relationship with Diane Keaton’s ditzy eccentric. Yes, indeed, this is a Woody Allen movie........ (awkward) but no matter what you think of him, this is just a great movie. Period. And I swear it's more appropriate than his other films. And DIANEEEEEEEEEEEE. :) :) :)
SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS (1941) - Slapstick, Satire, & Dog Bark Sneezes 27.02.2023 31:03
Preston Sturges works his magic in a screwball tale of a film director who goes on the road as a tramp to help write his socially significant screenplay. I LOVED this movie. It's filled with slapstick moments, but it's more than that. Deep at its core is a movie about the beauty of humanity and everyday things. Trailer: https://youtu.be/ULyso4j6c_g
PANDORA'S BOX (1929) - Lulu, Scandal, & Murder, Oh My! 23.02.2023 25:41
GW Pabst’s celebrated adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s two plays about the unintentionally destructive actions of the effortlessly seductive Lulu centers on a rightly acclaimed performance by Louise Brooks, who oozes careless vivacity and irresistible charm as Lulu captivates the Berlin bourgeoisie. Trailer: https://youtu.be/P4EzcJPqAGg
