The difference between a hospital and a country club? Mission - The entire body of Christ shares a common mission for witness to Christ found in Acts 1:8, a commitment to be light bearers by holding the word of life (Phil. 2:15-16), and beacons in every city where we draw people to the glorified Christ who dwells among us (Rev. 1:12-16)  

Joshua's farewell address to Israel called for their faithfulness to the Word and love for God (Joshua 23:1-13, 24:14-15), to avoid syncretism and idolatry.

Troubling impulses from within may have nothing to do with surface concerns, but come from the Lord's further, deeper operation among us (Joshua 22:10-34).

2 and 1/2 tribes chose land east of the Jordan, which, on surface level, was a legitimate choice (Joshua 22:1-6), but the deeper view of the cross exposes the choice as problematic.

One tribe felt their space was too small because they were accommodating the Canaanites rather than driving them out; Joshua rebuked their laziness (Joshua 17:14-18).

The five daughters of Zelophehad are an example of esteeming and valuing the land and fighting for their future in it (Joshua 17:3-6).

Othniel & Achsah are a model marriage of a couple ambitious to grow the blessing of their inheritance in the land all the way to the end of their lives (Joshua 15:16-19; Judges 3:9-10).

Caleb's life provides helpful orientation points for all the people of God who seek to overcome obstacles to faith (Joshua 14:6-15; 15:15-16; Numbers 13:27-33).

God's distributions, whether in the Old or New Covenants, are to be surveyed, explored, and possessed, not ignored (Joshua 13-22).

Having entered a cooperative rhythm with God, Israel experiences ongoing victory (Joshua 10:29 - 12:24).

God fights for His people in spite of, and even through their mistakes by granting great signs, and destroying enemies Himself (Joshua 10:1-28).

The Gibeonites appear, "making friends," and deceiving the people of God--a tactic of Satan that works upon those who are not in the habit of consulting God (Joshua Chapter 9).

There must be an increasing commitment to Christ and His word at the heart of the church (Joshua 8:30-35; Deut. 11:29).

Following true repentance the people of God experience fresh power and clarity (Joshua 8:1-29).

The holiness of God is critical to our fellowship with Him ; only the blood of Jesus can maintain us in His presence (Joshua 7; 1 John 1:7-9).

Israel's circumcision denotes our cutting off of the flesh in daily living (Chapter 5, Phil. 3:3, Col. 3:5, Rom. 8:13).

When Israel crossed the Jordan River together with the ark, it was their identification in type, with the death of Christ (Chapter 3-4); in order to receive the inheritance, spiritual death is needed.

Rahab illustrated that she, representing all the condemned gentile world (2:10), could go on to inherit the land through faith, together with Israel (Joshua 2:11, Rom. 10:17; Heb. 11:31).

We must go in and walk in what the Lord has given (Joshua 1:3), being strong to inherit it (v.6) by obeying the word and meditating on it day and night (v. 7-8; c.f. Heb. 4:12-14).

We must have a determination to take what the Lord gives in Christ, regardless of the conflicts which might occur (Deut 26:1, John 16:33, 1 John 5:4, Eph. 6:12, 2 Cor. 10:3, Acts 26:18).

The reality of the good land is the intended experience for all God's people (Ex. 3:7-8, Deut. 8:7-10, Col. 2:6-7).

God took over from Samuel's parents, and directly trained him in the prophetic office (1 Sam. 3:11-21).

Samuel received a visionary word and the call of God, facilitated through the limited coaching of Eli (1 Samuel 3:1-11).

Hannah continued to enable Samuel's service to the Lord (1 Sam. 2:11, 18-19), however, Eli failed to restrain his sons' failures (1 Sam. 2:22-36).
