Saying goodbye is difficult, but it has some obvious benefits. It allows us to reflect on where we’ve been together. We should never be surprised by hard times! According to secular thinking, suffering has no value. It is detrimental! It is random and senseless… It just happens. We can only passively accept and endure, hoping it will end soon.

Peter reminds the believes that they are living in the last days and should therefore accept suffering instead of sinful pursuits, love earnestedly, show hospitality and serve others as servants of God. Since we are in the last days believers should reject self interest for the interest of others.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. 1 Peter 3:18

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be trouble, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27

Peter is calling the new believers in Asia Minor to good lives – to lives that are so good that they draw others to God (2:12). 1 Peter 3 begins with the word, ‘wives’, but it is settled squarely in the context of the broad mission of God. Earlier 1 Peter 2:12 says that we are to “live such good lives among the pagans that…they may see your good deeds & glorify God on the day he visits us.”
