Welcome to Give Attendance to Reading, with Max and Charlie Taylor. This podcast was born out of our love for reading and discussing theology and Christian ministry, and it has grown to include topics such as culture, geo-politics, and practical Christian living. Our goal is to cover the best books in Christian literature, one chapter at a time. By listening in each week, not only will you hear a summary of each book, but you will also get commentary on the topics discussed along with our take on how to apply the information to our everyday lives. Thanks for listening, let’s get into it!

041. Vol. 4, Ch. 6: God Dwells In Us 27.01.2025

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Jones gets into the mechanics of our verse today, which is a good reminder of what it looks like to conduct deep Bible study. Things like asking the text questions, comparing Scripture with cross-references from itself, and connecting every verse with the context and flow are important Bible study techniques. The main takeaway is the importance of living b...

040. Vol. 4, Ch. 5: We Ought Also… 13.01.2025

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   There are so many benefits to expository study of Scripture. In today’s message from D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, we see the natural outworking of understanding the love of God. It is important that we understand Christianity is not merely truth to be contemplated, it must be lived. It is so good to incorporate Bible study in your devotions, but may we live out...

039. Vol. 4, Ch. 4: The Manifest Love of God 06.01.2025

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Link to the One Line A Day 5-year Memory Journal by Chronicle Books on Amazon (no, we don't get any commission if you purchase this...sadly😂)   What a timely reminder of God’s amazing love for us as we head into a new year. Lloyd-Jones argues that a lack of understanding God’s love is one of the greatest needs of our time. This is so important because we...

038. Vol. 4, Ch. 3: Born of God 30.12.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   If you were able to read this chapter, we trust you were encouraged by its contents. On the show we discuss things like the essentialness of brotherly love, the history of Israel’s love for God, the failure of the church at Ephesus in losing their first love, the importance of our love for God and the love of God, as well as the differences between John’s...

037. Vol. 4, Ch. 2: The All-sufficiency of Christ 23.12.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Jones continues discussing the importance of testing the Spirits in this week’s chapter, and he does so by showing the centrality of Christ in our doctrine. He points out that anyone who misrepresents Christ is not of God. This includes getting the virgin birth, incarnation, atonement, or any other teaching of Christ wrong. We discuss the dangers of progre...

036. Vol. 4, Ch. 1: Test the Spirits 16.12.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   To follow up from last week, we are looking at the importance of not only having the Holy Spirit, but also testing the Spirits. This chapter emphasizes the importance of balance to avoid extremes, how a person’s lived experiences affect their message, and why it sometimes feels as though we are fighting error on multiple fronts from multiple directions. It...

035. Vol. 3, Ch. 11: The Holy Spirit 09.12.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Today we get to talk about the often neglected topic of the Holy Spirit. We discuss how to be surrendered to the Holy Spirit, errors of the charismatic movement, the day of Pentecost, and how the gift of the Holy Spirit pertains to salvation, the Christian, and the church. The Holy Spirit is vital to our spiritual lives and we would do well to study Him an...

034. Vol. 3, Ch. 10: Condemnation, Confidence, and Assurance 02.12.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   We get into the importance of prayer, a controversy about our hearts and God condemning us, and the issues of confidence and assurance, all in this episode. It is so important that we think about what prayer really is, which is being “before God” as Jones puts it. This communion with God is what sustains every believer in our vital relationship with God. W...

033. Vol. 3, Ch. 9: Love in Action 25.11.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   In this episode, we discuss the dangers of being enamored with Christian concepts and not actually living them out. We also go on to talk about the difference between loving and liking and how we are to love God and love the brethren. Ultimately our example, when it comes to this kind of love, is Jesus Christ and the love of God Himself. Let’s not just enj...

032. Vol. 3, Ch. 8: The Marks of a Christian 18.11.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Another great chapter to discuss this week! The topic is incredibly simple as Jones uses our passage in 1 John to show three marks of a Christian (1) he is unlike the world, (2) the world hates him, and (3) he loves the brethren. This reading was a genuine encouragement to me (Max) personally, and I hope you enjoy listening to Charlie and me discuss it.  ...

031. Vol. 3, Ch. 7: From Death to Life 11.11.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). This verse comes up in today’s episode as we discuss how we are to practically love one another. We also talk about the importance of realizing who we are (not just what we do), what it means to be transferred from death to life, the struggle of sanctificati...

030. Vol. 3, Ch. 6: Growing in Grace 04.11.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   This week we are discussing the controversial topic of sinless perfection from 1 John. As usual, Jones does a masterful job of examining this tricky subject by looking at the language, content, context, comparing Scripture with other Scripture, and testing his argument’s consistency. Not only is this chapter a good defense of his position on this issue, bu...

029. Vol. 3, Ch. 5: Victory over the Devil 28.10.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   We’re back! Thank you for bearing with us as we took a few weeks off to deal with things in our personal lives and recover from a cold. We are glad to be back discussing another great chapter from Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ book, Life in Christ. This week we are looking at Christ’s purpose in coming so that He could destroy the kingdom of the devil. We discuss th...

Monologue from Max 14.10.2024

We are coming off of an insanely busy week that was filled with several scheduled activities and some unexpected events, and did not have time to record our full episode. We are really sorry to our listeners for missing today, and we plan to get back on schedule starting next Monday. May you reflect on the goodness of God and all that we have to be thankful for over this beautiful fall season.

028. Vol. 3, Ch. 4: The Sinless Savior 07.10.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Continuing the appeal for holiness, this epistle now shifts the attention to our perfect Messiah who came to address our sin. This chapter puts a razor-sharp focus on the reason Christ came, to rescue us from sin and give us His righteousness. We want to view Jesus properly and understand that He saves us from the guilt of sin and the power of sin. Contrar...

027. Vol. 3, Ch. 3: Holiness 30.09.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   This conversation is so important. Charlie and I both known people who have been affected by wrong teaching on holiness. This includes Keswick (pronounced “kezick”) teaching, entire sanctification, and the holiness (synonymous with sinless perfection) movement, which has gained a lot of traction through many of the dispensational or arminian denominations...

026. Vol. 3, Ch. 2: Destined for Glory 23.09.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   As Christians, we are confident and fully persuaded that we are destined for glory, but glory itself is not the highest prize, rather being with Christ is what we look forward to most. Our motivation in life or death should be our fellowship with him. Today we are discussing the truths that believers have confidence in our current standing in Christ, we ha...

025. Special Guest: Caison Britt - Vol. 3, Ch. 1: Children of God 16.09.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   This is a special episode because we got to record it in the living room of a good friend of mine, Caison Britt. While down in Florida for a wedding of a former youth group student and a friend from college, I got to visit with Caison, and since he is a regular listener we decided to collaborate for this episode. We hope you enjoy getting to hear from Cais...

024. Vol. 2, Ch. 11: The Truth and the Lie 09.09.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   It is easy to downplay the danger of a lie. In this episode, we are looking at the truth, lies, and how we should fight false doctrines that try to creep into our lives. Jones gives several reasons as to why we should be so harsh in our response to deception, and we also share some thoughts on the topics of interdenominational unity, pragmatism, and theolo...

023. Vol. 2, Ch. 10: The Anointing of the Holy Spirit 02.09.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   This week we discuss the role of the Holy Spirit as it applies to doctrine as well as daily leading. After a description of the chapter’s content, we give our own take on the topic. What exactly does it mean that a Christian has no need that any man teach him? How has this historically been taken to the extreme? What are the differences between inspiration...

022. Vol. 2, Ch. 9: Of The Church 26.08.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   We all see the dwindling numbers at church and the statistics paint a bleak picture for the church’s future, so what are we to do? Some say it is time to set aside nonessential differences and band together to fight the enemy, but D. Martyn Lloyd Jones preaches a different premise from this passage in 1 John. As we discuss in today’s episode, the guiding p...

021. Vol. 2, Ch. 8: The Antichrist 19.08.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Before we get into the topic on the end times and the literal antichrist, we first discuss some applications for believers today, from pastors to lay church members. We must ask ourselves how we are protecting ourselves from false teaching that rises up from within the church? And are we treating our pastor as a functional Messiah rather than looking to Ch...

020. Vol. 2, Ch. 7: The Love of the World 12.08.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Worldliness is a complicated and often-misunderstood topic in Christian teaching, but it doesn’t have to be. This chapter discusses what worldliness truly means (and, maybe even more helpfully, what it does not mean). From politics and technology to history and eschatology, we discuss the basic principle that worldliness is intended to mean as well as seve...

019. Vol. 2, Ch. 6: Children, Young Men, and Fathers 05.08.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   This chapter was not laid out in the way we were anticipating, which was refreshing. Rather than breaking down the intricate connections and structuring of these principles, Lloyd-Jones focuses on three simple truths we need to be reminded of. These simple assurances are (1) knowing that our sins are forgiven, (2) knowing the way in which our sins are over...

018. Vol. 2, Ch. 5: Loving the Brethren 29.07.2024

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Have you ever wondered how love for the brethren affects our walk with Christ? That is what we discuss in today’s episode. We think this is a very important topic since brotherly love is the chief distinguisher of a follower of Jesus. We also touch on the seriousness of dealing treacherously with the brethren, which also leads to dealing treacherously with...
