The gospel of John closes with this strange story of Jesus once again appearing to his disciples and helping them catch some fish. But in that moment, he takes the opportunity to restore Peter to his place of leadership. In doing so, he reminds him, and us, that our performance is not what earns us favor with God.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “seeing is believing,” and we know from experience that being able to see evidence for ourselves is helpful in determining whether or not something is true or real.  But what do we do when we don’t have the luxury of seeing evidence for ourselves? In John 20 we find a man named Thomas that was faced with this question, and Jesus’ response to him might surprise you.

John starts his story with the baptism of Jesus, and ends with the resurrection – which is emblematic of baptism. In other words, the critical years of Jesus’s life and ministry were lived between two baptisms. Shouldn’t the same be true of us?

In John 18 we see the inevitable clash between Jesus & the powers of darkness. As this plays out we how that Jesus always stands victorious and also that he gives us a model of how to live out our faith in him today.
