Odds are most of you listening to me here, or on-line right now are experiencing some sort of conflict in your lives. If you’re not experiencing conflict now, you’ve just worked through some, or there is some on the horizon.  And I want you to know…you’re not alone. Conflict is inevitable, even when you’re an Apostle of Jesus and doing everything God asks you to do. Conflict Happens.

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about one of the most powerful words in the English language. It’s the word “should.” Today, we are going to see what happened in the early church when one group of Christians start "shoulding" another group of Christians and how it all works out.

Now, as we fulfill our assignment as ambassadors taking Jesus to our friends, neighbors and nations, what should we expect will happen? 

We’re continuing in our Acts series this morning so make sure you have your Bibles open to chapter 13. Jesus said, in chapter 1, that His followers would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth (v 8). That’s what we’re going to see today—faithful Jesus followers taking the good news to people who live far from them.

Today our story in Acts 12 reminds us of some incredibly important news and some incredibly refreshing news that can counter the threatening sense that evil seems to rule the day.

Today, I want to talk about the significance of the birth of Jesus. Because, friends, our trees, lights, presents, parties, feasts, cards, ribbons, eggnog and stockings are meaningless if we don’t understand why His birth is such a big deal. Christmas is precious because God entered the world as a baby. Christmas gives us hope because God came, in person, to save us!

Today in our story in Acts, God makes a dramatic point about how much the truth matters to him and to the health of all our relationships.

Jesus has saved us. He has chosen us. He calls us His royal priesthood. We are to serve Him, represent Him, and bring Him honor and glory. He has entrusted His good news about forgiveness and salvation, not that we would remain neutral to save face, but that others would come to know Jesus and be saved!

God has called us to be his representatives, his ambassadors, his witnesses. God has given us that command. Our commitment to that command must be as resolved as these early Apostles. In the face of resistance, we must never be silenced. When resistance arises, we must remain resolved to advance the truth of Jesus.

As we step into chapter 3, we see an incredible story and demonstration of the power of the name of Jesus…and how it can heal body and soul.

This morning we’re going to pick up right where Sam left off last week: Acts 2:42-47. So, open your bibles because it will be important for you to follow along. What we’re going to see is the beginning of the church, the assembly of believers who belong to Jesus, and the importance of Christian life being lived in community.
