As Great Lent continues, we may begin to ask: What is all this discipline for? Fasting. Restraint. Watchfulness. Perseverance. Jesus gives us the answer in one direct and challenging sentence. The Christian life is not about comfort. It is about the Cross.

We are now several days into Great Lent. The initial motivation may be fading. The body feels the fast. The mind resists discipline. The spirit wavers between resolve and fatigue. And this is precisely when Scripture speaks gently but firmly: Do not grow weary.

Great Lent is not casual. It asks something of us. Discipline. Attention. Humility. And that can feel restrictive. But today, Christ gives us an image that reframes everything. He speaks of two paths — one wide and easy, and one narrow and difficult. And He tells us where they lead.

As Great Lent continues, something subtle can happen. We become aware of our weaknesses. Our failures feel clearer. Our inconsistencies feel heavier. And sometimes, when we see our shortcomings, we assume God must feel distant. But today’s psalm says the opposite.

Before we can enter the wilderness, we must first let go of what we’ve been carrying.
