Five Minutes in the Garden - A Daily Discussion of God's Word

As we move closer to the final days of Great Lent, the tone begins to shift. The invitation is still there. The mercy is still there. But now, there’s also a sense of urgency. Not fear. But awareness. Because it’s possible to begin well… and slowly drift. To grow attentive… and then become distracted again. And today, Christ gives us a simple command: Stay awake.

As we draw closer to the end of Great Lent, the Church begins to speak more directly to the heart. Not asking us to do more. Not asking us to prove anything. But inviting us to go deeper. Because it’s possible to walk through Lent… to fast… to pray… to adjust our habits… and still keep part of ourselves closed. And today, we hear a different kind of call. Not outward. But inward.

As we come to the end of this stretch of our Lenten journey, we begin to see what all of this has been forming within us. Not just discipline. Not just awareness. But faithfulness. Because after all the teaching… after all the growing… a question remains: What does God actually desire from our lives? And today, Christ gives us a glimpse of the answer.

Over the past few days, we’ve been moving deeper into the heart of thespiritual life. We’ve learned to remain present. To receive peace. To abide in Christ. And now, Jesus turns our attention outward. Because what’s happening within us will eventually become visible. Not all at once. Not perfectly. But over time. And today, Christ gives us a simple way to understand that process.

As we continue this Lenten journey, we begin to see apattern. When we remain present, we find peace. And when we find peace, we begin to ask a deeper question: How do we stay here? How do we remain grounded… steady… connected? Because it’s one thing to experience a moment of closenesswith God. It’s another to live from it. And today, Christ gives us the answer.

After learning to remain in the present moment, something begins to change within us. Not around us. Not in our circumstances. But within. Because when we stop living in tomorrow, and begin to stay with God today, we begin to experience something deeper. Not control. Not certainty. But peace. And today, Christ speaks directly to that.

As Great Lent continues, we begin to notice not only what we do… but where our minds tend to live. So often, we are not here. We are in tomorrow— anticipating, planning, replaying, worrying, preparing. And in doing so, we quietly step out of the present moment. But today, Christ gently calls us back.

As we move deeper into Lent, we begin to look ahead. Toward resurrection. Toward recognition. Toward the moment when Christ is revealed.

In a world that measures value by size and visibility, Christ reveals a different standard. He sees the heart. In today’s reading, Jesus is watching as people place their offerings into the temple treasury. Many give out of their abundance—large gifts that are easily noticed. Forgiveness isn’t a single moment. It’s a way of living. And Christ makes something clear: We cannot receive mercy without becoming people of mercy. In today’s reading, Jesus continues His teaching with a parable— a story of mercy given, and mercy withheld. It invites us to examine not just what we’ve received, but what we’re willing to give.

Sometimes we believe that strong faith must feel strong. But Jesus teaches something very different. Faith doesn’t need to be large. It needs to be real.

As we continue through Great Lent, Jesus now brings His teaching to a conclusion. After speaking about the heart, the eye, the will, and the way we live, He gives us a final image. Two builders. Two foundations. Two outcomes. And the difference isn’t hearing His words. It’s doing them.

As we move deeper into Lent, Christ reminds us that the spiritual life is not meant to remain hidden. When the heart is transformed, light begins to shine outward. And that light has a purpose.

Christ’s teachings about love and mercy often become most powerful through His parables. Today we hear a moment from one of His most famous stories. It reveals what compassion truly looks like.

Yesterday we heard Christ teach that a tree is known by its fruit. Today He continues that image — pushing us deeper. Because the issue isn’t simply behavior. It’s the condition of the heart.

Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus has been guiding us inward — toward humility, trust, and purity of heart. But the spiritual life doesn’t remain hidden forever. Eventually, what grows inside us becomes visible. And today Christ offers a simple way to discern what is genuine. Look at the fruit.

Over the past few days, Jesus has been guiding us deeper into the interior life. First, He spoke about treasure — what our hearts truly value. Then He spoke about the eye — the vision that fills our lives with light or darkness. And today, He brings the teaching to its conclusion. Because in the end, the spiritual life comes down to a single question: Who is your master?

Yesterday we heard Christ say, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Today, He continues that teaching with a powerful image. He speaks about the eye — the lamp of the body. In other words, the way we see the world shapes everything within us. And Lent, in many ways, is about clearing our vision.

As Great Lent continues, something subtle begins to happen. When we fast… we notice our cravings. When we pray… we notice our distractions. When we simplify… we notice what we cling to. Lent has a way of revealing the true orientation of our hearts. And today, Jesus gives us a simple but searching principle.
