We all tend to get tripped up with things that have no eternal impact, and miss out on experiencing the glory that comes from being obedient to joining God on his mission of going, sending, and making disciples of all nations. Belief in the gospel allows us to see that there is nothing more valuable or important than joining God in obedience to go, send, and make disciples.

We far too often try to muscle our way toward obedience and godly living, but we’ve never had the will power to do it, and we never will. When we place our hope for change in God’s power instead of our own, we let Christ make us who we need to be so we can do what we’re called to do.

We like to define what order looks like in our lives, but this brings chaos. Order should be defined by the gospel and shepherded by those God has appointed. The gospel produces order and not chaos. Our natural tendency is towards chaos and we need others to guide us towards order. This is what is looks like to live a shepherded life centered on the gospel.

We don’t like people preaching to us, but because we reject preaching, we reject all that God accomplishes through the preaching of His word in our lives. God has called some to preach His word, and when we humbly receive that word of the gospel, God ignites real, beautiful, and permanent change in us through it.

We live in isolation and stagnation because we don’t understand our need to shepherded into something more. God loves his sheep fiercely. He sent His own Son to die for them. We should both demand to be shepherded well and allow ourselves to be known well enough to be shepherded.

We have a tendency to ignore the Spirit or resist the Spirit, and when we do, we miss out on all the blessings He wants to send our way. When we let the Spirit of God direct our steps, He always walks us into blessing. We just have to listen to His voice and obey what He says. We desperately need help to overcome our brokenness, but we look in all the wrong places for that help. Christmas is a prime example. We feel empty, dead, and hopeless, and we look to presents, lights, family to fill it, and it only makes it worse. Only the Spirit of Jesus Christ can provide all that our hearts long for. The world seems chaotic and frightening as long as we miss how the Spirit is using every event to accomplish His perfect plan. The Spirit drives the events of history, and as long as He’s driving, we can rest assured that every event will further His good and perfect plans, even if that is the crucifixion of the Son of God.

When we attempt to live our life on our own power, we miss all the supernatural power that the Spirit could bring to it. Christ died so that we would be clean enough for His Holy Spirit to dwell in us and empower us. All the great works of God in our life flow from the Spirit’s work in us. We think we have the option of taking the gospel to the lost world because we don’t understand what God has done for us and what He’s called us to do in light of it. When you have seen the glory of Christ and believed in his saving work, you have no choice but to raise your hand in willing service to his mission, no matter where He sends you or what it takes to get there.

We have forgotten how unconditionally Christ has loved us, and therefore we don’t love those around us enough to bear their burdens with them. Christ pursued us and bore our burden when we couldn’t carry it, so in response, we need to help bear the burdens of those around us, especially our brothers and sisters carrying the heavy load of providing homes for children through foster care and adoptio...
