Introduction:   In chapter 9, Paul defended God against the charges that He failed or was unjust to Israel. Now Paul explains why so many Jews missed out on the Gospel: they clung to the Gospel of Self instead of the Gospel of Jesus.

Introduction: Chapter 9 opened with an important question: Did God fail? If God failed to keep His promise to Israel, then maybe He will fail to keep His promises to us. Paul now turns to another question that could cause us not to trust God: Is God unjust? As with last week, we will see that God is trustworthy.

Introduction: At the end of chapter 8, Paul exultantly tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Now, he turns to the subject of the Jews who largely rejected Christ. Their spiritual state raises the question: Did God fail to keep his chosen people?

Introduction: Romans 8:31-39 is the great “So What?” to the first eight chapters of Romans. Paul summarizes what he has said so far with a flourish, celebrating God’s unbreakable love.

Introduction: Romans 8:17 ends with the statement: “we are heirs of God and fellow heirs of Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” Is the inheritance worth the suffering? Even if it is, how do we endure the suffering?

Introduction: In last week’s passage, God told us that there is no condemnation for those in Christ, and that we’ve been made alive through the Holy Spirit. Today’s passage reveals our adoption into God’s family, and the Holy Spirit’s role in making that real.

Scripture Reading: Taylor Mobley Introduction: Romans 7 showed the depth of struggle caused by sin’s influence. It is natural to ask what God thinks of us given the power of sin’s influence in our lives. Paul’s answer in Romans 8 is reassuring. Today we enter one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible. Introduction:  Paul has connected the Law of Moses with sin and death. In Romans 7:1-6, Paul assured us that we are free from the Law’s condemnation. That raised a natural question to his original readers: Was the Law bad? Paul answers that question in today’s passage by causing us to take a hard look at ourselves.

Introduction:  Paul shows in Romans 6 that we are no longer under sin’s control because of WHO we are (6:1-14) and WHOSE we are (6:15-23). But what happens to us as we continue to sin? Does God just turn around and condemn us again? Paul reassures us in Romans 7:1-6 that we are free from what used to condemn us.

Introduction: In today’s passage, the Scripture addresses those who would use God’s grace as a license to sin. The apostle Paul answers the question, “Is it OK to sin, because we aren’t under the law but under grace?”

Introduction: Paul ends Romans 5 with the promise that even as sin increases, grace abounds all the more. Paul starts Romans 6 by anticipating a question: Why not sin more to generate more grace? Paul answers in an unexpected way. He doesn’t use a cost-benefit analysis like we so often do. He talks about who we are.

Introduction: In Romans 5:1-11 Paul showed that Jesus made it possible to have peace with God. Jesus’ death changes how we view suffering, where we place our hope, and how God relates to us. In this week’s passage Paul explains why we can be confident that Jesus can deliver on all of these promises.

Introduction: In the first four chapters, Paul argues that we are made right with God (“justified”) by faith in Jesus and His death on the cross. In chapter 5, Paul helps us understand the significance of that truth.

Introduction: In last week’s passage, the apostle Paul stated the doctrine of justification by faith. Today, he provides proof of this truth by looking at the example of Abraham.

Introduction: “But now” in verse 21 might be the most joyous words in the Bible. Paul has spent the first part of Romans showing that we are trapped under sin. But now… that is not our situation any longer. Be careful, however. This passage isn’t about us. It’s about God’s character.
