The Witcher is now a wildly popular fantasy TV series on Netflix. But before that, it was a popular video game series (still is), and before that, a successful and rich fantasy fiction series. Zach and Jim welcome guest friend (and big Witcher fan) Brendan on to the show to discuss all of this. Can you enjoy just the TV series, or are you missing out if you don't read the books and/or play the gam...

Introducing a new, very occasional type of episode for the podcast, where Jim goes off on a topic of his own choosing. These episodes will always be created on our YouTube channel, and then ported over as audio to the podcast stream. Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve - they came to Tear hoping to spring a trap. In this episode, mission accomplished, but they find you don't always get what you want, and when you do, it isn't always what you thought you were getting. Mat has a similar experience here, getting what he wanted but not in the way he expected. Have a listen, and see what we mean. Join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/jMWy...

Zach and Jim get into a full breakdown of Brandon Sanderson's magic system in the first of his published novels. Full book spoilers will abound, although we'll avoid spoiling much else of the greater Cosmere collection of stories. We're spending all our time in Tear for this episode, first with the girls, then some of the guys. Everyone's trying to figure out what others are doing, and no one is quite getting it right. But still, into this story some luck does fall. Especially Master Cauthon. You KNOW luck is going to side with that fellow. Check it out. Zach and Jim were honored to be invited to participate in this year's WoT-a-Holiday, December 12, 2021. Joining with a whole bunch of creators, Fantasy for the Ages filled one hour of the 24-hour charity livestream, an effort that altogether raised over $10,000 for Brandon Sanderson's The Lightweaver Foundation! For our hour, we joined up with Cheyenne, Alfonsina and Ilana, the three-member team o...

Finally, finally, Mat and Thom make it to Caemlyn, where Mat should be able to easily deliver that letter from Elayne, allowing him to move on to the finer things of life:  gambling, drinking, and flirting. Of course, we're talking Matrim Cauthon here - it clearly can't be THAT simple. In fact, Mat really steps into it here, and we have the launchpad for MUCH of his story arc the rest of the...

Jim & Zach discuss the many great suggestions for Gateway books into the Fantasy Fiction genre that were spurred by last month's Tri-Reader Tournament on this topic, and they share their own preferences and ideas. Wow - you thought the last episode had all the action? Here we've got heavy feet, bedroom shenanigans, daring flights from danger, and last stands. These chapters are a veritable adrenaline rush. We reconnect with both Mat and Perrin, separately in these chapters, a tale of two cities, if you will. One of them sees explosive events occur, the other's outlook is a bit more gray. Jim & Zach went live to rank a whole bunch of "Top 3" and "Bottom 3" preferences from Sci-Fi & Fantasy, categories they came up with as well as many contributed by listeners. Lots of fun - take a look! Be aware, very minor spoilers come up on occasion, but nothing that should be shocking or terrible for most of you. This was done as a YouTube livestream, and available in video format on ou...

One of our longer episodes for you this time, and it's no surprise, with all the key characters and information you are about to discover. All three chapters are focused on our central ladies, Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne - who have everything in hand, only of course they don't. You may begin to sense a pattern with that...Join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/jMWyVJ6qKkSupport us on Patreon: http...

The Wheel of Time begins on Amazon Prime Nov. 19, just a few days away. Zach and Jim livestreamed on the YouTube channel to talk about their thoughts anticipating the show, including how they plan to watch the first three episodes, what they are hoping to see, and what they hope they WON'T see. The video has been converted for audio distribution here, but remains available as well on our YouTube c...

Perrin, Loial, Lan & Moiraine need to skip town quickly, after that little to-do Perrin got into with the Whitecloaks when he did the right thing and freed Gaul. But will they get out of town free? Or will there be... encumbrances? Don't know what that word means? You could look it up - or you could just listen to the episode, and enjoy. Oh yes, we're cooking with gas this week. Hot stuff coming to you, as Zach and Jim converse about the common tropes of fantasy fiction: What are they, are they bad, what do they mean? As usual, we MOSTLY stay on topic, and we think you'll find the conversation entertaining. A couple of watershed chapters for Perrin's experience in these books, as he comes to a foreseen moment ("Thanks, Min!") and makes a pivotal decision - a decision that will impact him profoundly through the rest of the series. Time for a serious dose of Matrim Cauthon. The man has a plan, the means, and the luck - the incredible luck - to pull off Operation Escape Tar Valon. Turns out, he's REALLY going to need that luck, because the plan and means would never have been enough. This is a wild escapade from start to finish for our Mat. I also features a return of an enjoyable characters who's played a small role in the f...

The episode we know you all were waiting for.  Er, no, maybe it's just the one Jim has been waiting for.  Nevertheless, we hope and trust you'll enjoy our meanderings through such critical content, to best prepare you for the unlikely inevitability of the coming of the zombies! Couple of chapters for you here, first a Mat POV, then Nynaeve. We have plots galore here - a plot to use Mat, a plot by Mat to skedaddle, a plot by our three ladies to get after the Black, and a plot by the Amyrlin to make good use of them. Oh, and someone is clearly plotting in the background, because we've got clues and dead people. Enjoy the ride! Join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/jMWyVJ6...

Our girls in the White Tower are busily about the work of deciphering the Black Ajah mysteries in this episode - plenty of clues, very few answers. The result? Perhaps the World of Dreams may have some answers. We're going to see Egwene check that out here - and she definitely learns some things. Not necessarily what she was hoping for! Time for the adventures of Mat and Egwene. OK, not the two of them together. Separate adventures. And yes, many others are involved. But including one character who is not who you think she is... But hey - spoiler-lite - won't say any more, other than we hope you enjoy. Especially the Mat scene. Wow - that's a lot of fun - you'll see what we mean! Let's get back to Egwene. Monumental happenings in her plot line occur in these three chapters. The stuff of dreams! By the time we're done, she have seen such possibilities, and really come up in the world. Almost more than one can believe. OK, enough of this, you've just got to listen, hear what in the world we're talking about. Enjoy! Join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/jMWyVJ6qKkSupport us...
