Faith On Hill

This week we begin the story of our last and most well-known judge: Samson. But as with all people, the story really begins with his mom. Pastor Adam talks about how even in a time where everyone else rejected God, Samson's mom still believed and stayed faithful. We also talk about how even real believers need help to live in the ways of Jesus.

Chapter 12 is bleak and dark. There is nothing uplifting. But this week, we talk about how we need these parts of the Bible see the full work of God's power and grace and just how much we have been saved from! Also, Pastor Adam talks about the word Shibboleth and gets to make two references from one of his favorite TV shows to do it.

This morning we talk about three judges: Tola, Jair and Jephthah. How they helped bring peace to Israel for over 80 years, and how their rash mistakes brought great tragedy that was remembered for generations to come.

Judges chapter 9 tells the story of broken people in a broken time living in the suffering caused by that brokenness. This week, Pastor Adam talks about what was going on in Israel in that time, how it parallels things going on in our day, and how Jesus is the only hope we have for getting out of this mess.

This week we finish the story of Gideon and talk about his peaks and valleys. We also get a sense of the spiritual climate of Israel after their deliverance.

Gideon has called the people to fight! But he doesn't go to war right away. At each step God leads Gideon to different places that build up his faith and spiritual muscle for the larger work ahead. This week Pastor Adam talks about how God is still working this way in our lives, building our spiritual strength as we go forward.

A lot of people are like Gideon. They seem to want to "God stuff" but don't know how to go about it the right way. Every time they try to do anything spiritual, it feels like there is always someone telling them all of the things they did wrong. Deconstruction has become a buzz word in the evangelical church in the past few years often associated with people leaving the Christian faith. But what if deconstruction is healthy and actually a part of the Gospel story of life change? The Bible was written to specific people in specific places and contexts. But sometimes it seems like the Bible is speaking to a broader issue or to something that is happening in our day. Judges chapter 4 is one of those times. It tells the story of Deborah, the woman who led Israel. It speaks to what was happening to an ancient people, it speaks to universal truths and it speaks to conversations...

Judges chapter 3 deals with the concepts of the perfect will of God vs the permissive will of God. It also looks at how humanity's own freewill choice works in the middle of all of this as well.

In the first two chapters of the book of Judges we see that Israel tried to do the right thing... and failed. The first generation didn't finish the job. The second generation made compromises. The third generation gave themselves fully to pagan idolatry. People like to say "kids these days"... but what about parents these days? Or what about grandparents these days? Before we start the book of Judges proper, Pastor Adam takes this week to talk about the difference between Israel and the church.

This week we start the book of Judges which picks up almost immediately after Joshua ends. Pastor Adam gives an overview introduction to the book as well as asking the question "why does the modern church look so much like ancient Israel? Isn't the new covenant supposed to be better?" We gather every Sunday at 10:30am both online and in-person.

Today is our final study in the Book of Joshua. Last week Joshua gave his final message to the people but now he is taking his final action: reminding them of their history and calling them to repentance. Over 25 years after the book of Joshua begins, Joshua calls the leaders of Israel together to give one final message to the people as he nears the end of his life. This week we will talk about what Joshua thought were the most important things he could say to the people and how they matter to our lives in 2024.

Last week we didn't have the chance to look at verse 43-45 of Joshua chapter 21. It is the summary of the people of Israel taking possession of the promised land. Yet, it is not exactly true. So how do we deal with that? What can we learn and does it matter to our lives today?

In Joshua 22 there is family drama among the children of Israel that almost leads to a Civil War. What caused it and what can we learn from it so we can avoid the same relational issues in our homes and communities?

In Chapter 20 God commands that cities of refuge be established in the land of Israel. In Chapter 21, God commands that Levitical cities be established. But by the time of Christ, none of this was happening or even possible. What do you do when the Bible has a clear command, rule or practice for God's people that can no longer be followed?

Sometimes people ask what kind of church we are? We get it. Faith on Hill is a generic name based largely on our street address. In this short video, Pastor Adam describes an average Sunday morning and talks about how we are an intentionally simple church that is part of a larger family but here for this community.

Seven Tribes of Israel had still not fulfilled the commands of God. Joshua now speaks prophetically to the people. Are their prophets in our day? What does that look like and who are they? We'll talk about it as we look at chapters 18 & 19 of the book of Joshua.

This week we talk about why Israel stopped fighting for better things and instead turned to sin and apathy. We'll also talk about cultural norms vs Biblical commands and how that works out in the Christian's life.

Chapter 13 starts out with God telling Joshua "you are too old". But God had used Moses in his old age and would use many older women and men after Joshua, why did it matter now? This week Pastor Adam talks about the very real issue of Ageism in the American church and how some people have unique callings unlike the rest of God's people.

We are back in the book of Joshua. This week we talk about the people who opposed and fought against the children of Israel taking the land. Who where they and what was really going on? We also talk about skipping "boring" parts of the Bible.

Jesus is risen indeed! Today, Pastor Adam talks about how Easter isn't just about the empty tomb but about how Easter means we can know God! Not just know about God, but actually know God personally and directly!
