Finally, after years hiding in caves, settling in foreign lands, and even fighting against his own countrymen, David is made king over all of Israel. However, that doesn't mean David's life is without obstacles. We begin our study on the book of 2 Samuel with David learning of the deaths of King Saul and Jonathan from an Amalekite, who claimed to have killed Saul in order to spare him any more suffering. However, his version of events differs from the battle account recorded in 1 Samuel 31. How will David receive the news of his master's death?

After King Saul and Jonathan are killed in battle, the Israelites have to face the tragic loss of their king and his immediate heir. With the Philistines taking territory away from Israel as a result of their defeat, there were still those who sought to honour their dead king, including David.

When David and his men return to the town of Ziklag, they find it in flames and their families taken away from them. As David faces the prospect of being stoned by his mighty men, he is deeply distressed. However, when David finds strength in the Lord His God, he is determined to go into the enemy's camp and take back everything that was stolen from him.
