This poem answers the call of chapter one for a witness to the human tragedy of Jerusalem's fall. It offers a crucial model for us. Where and how should we bear witness to social problems in our time and place?

This third poem, a small but brilliant shaft of light in the darkness of this book, helps us learn how to fight for hope in the midst of sorrow.

Lamentations 2 is a poem of desperation, as the author gives voice to the anguish the people of Israel felt when Jerusalem was destroyed by Babylon in 587 BC. It serves as a sobering memorial to God's wrath, God's justice, and God's faithfulness to do what He said He would do. Where can we find hope in this suffocating judgment?

This collection of poems is a memorial to unimaginable suffering, meant to help us understand the pain of loss, the importance of a witness, and the only possible hope.

When laments begin with honesty about our experience and move through desperation that gives up on any other source of hope, laments don?t threaten trust in God?s love and care. They deepen that trust.

Psalm 22 gives us a template for moving from desperation to prayer to praise knowing we have final victory in Jesus.

The Bible doesn't give us a method for getting rid of pain or suffering. But it does tell us what to remember in the midst of it.

How are we supposed to respond to injustice when it seems like God is nowhere to be found? The Bible teaches us that our authentic suffering leads to authentic lament, which leads to authentic hope in God.

John wrote this letter to help a friend understand what sort of leader he should support and whom he should avoid. The primary test: whose name matters most?

The truth about who God is, what he's done, and what he commands defines the sort of love we should have for one another.

At the end of his letter, John leaves us with a list of assurances he's been writing about all along. What does he want us to know?

John insists that having Jesus, and only Jesus, is the difference between life and death. But why? What do you have when you have Jesus?

When we see God through the gift of Jesus, what difference shows up in our lives? We will love what God loves, and we will trust what God commands.

Where do you stand with God? There is nothing more important to know about yourself. And when you see that God sees you through Jesus, when you come to know God loves you, it changes how you relate to God and to others.

John makes stark claims about love. And, in this passage, he points to the Christian's motivation for love and why that motivation matters.

Because Jesus rose from the dead, we are God's children now. And, one day, we will be like him.

Though most of us want to experience spiritual reality, John says not all spirituality comes from God. How can we tell what comes from God?s Spirit?

One of John's favorite themes is love for one another, but he's not naive. He knows that love sometimes feels like death. This text helps us when love isn't easy.

The primary mark of a genuine Christian is love. That's what John claims here. Why does love matter so much? What is this love he's talking about? And where should it show up in our lives?

In this passage John says that no one who knows God can keep on sinning. So what does that mean? Why is it impossible? And where does that leave me?

What do you gain when God makes you his child? John points us to three things.
