A lowly Jew is about to be put over all of the king's previous governors.  Naturally they are jealous and cannot accept this "demotion" without a fight. They must trump up charges if they wish to get rid of Daniel, however, because he is so righteous.  Their plot against him works and he is thrown into a hole in the ground never to be seen again. But then the unexpected happens the next...

Is the story of David & Goliath more than a story for the children's wing in Church?  If David's name means "Beloved" and his father, Jesse, means "I am," then are we meant to see Goliath as more than just an ancient human enemy of Israel? Great meaning is waiting to be discovered...

Joshua, who comes after Moses, will lead the people into the Promised Land to give them possession of the Land and to keep them from being like sheep without a shepherd.  He will do all of this with Eleazar (the "Helper") at his side, and he will begin after a 3-day period of preparation.

In Numbers 35, there is a passage about the cities of refuge.  Even though many Christians have never even heard of this passage, there is a story of Jesus' sacrifice and redemption embedded in these verses of judgement and justice.

In this final part of Exodus 32-34, emphasis is upon Moses making intercession with God.  With phrases like "outside the camp," "face to face," and "Joshua the son of Nun" the text is pointing us to the greatest intercession of all time.  

Moses continues to intercede on behalf of the people; God wants to call off the marriage, but Moses won't let it go and God agrees to go with them into the Promised Land.  God passes before Moses who is in a hole in the ground while God proclaims His character. The covenant is re-established and Moses returns to the people transformed.

The Golden Calf incident at the foot of Mt. Sinai in Exodus 32-34 has been discussed, taught, made movies about, and picked apart for centuries. But few connect it to the Christ Story.  Yet it was Jesus who came down from His position with God, interceded on the people's behalf, addressed a bad leadership, and called the faithful to Himself.

What is it? The people are hungry and complaining (again) and God is fulfilling their needs, and at the same time pointing to the greatest filling they will ever receive through Christ.

These two stories in Exodus are very similar even though they also have significant differences.  Why do these stories of thirsting in the wilderness sound similar and yet are obviously different?  Why does a tree make water sweet?  How does water come out of a rock - a rock that Paul says is Christ?

Leaven as influence; 3 days of darkness; pillar of cloud & fire as Holy Spirit; and "The Lord will fight for you."

The Exodus story is as wonderful from a typological perspective as it is from a historical perspective.  So many pieces of the historical narrative are just pointers to what we experience today in Christ.

The plagues and the Passover both have very strong connecting points to the Jesus story. 

The savior of Israel is born; his life is threatened as a baby; he grows up with a dual identity between the palace and slavery; his attempt to help his people is rejected; he is driven out of his home to a distant land where he finds a bride at a well and has a child named "stranger." Sound familiar?

More older brother/younger brother?  This is getting weird. Once again, the younger is given the lion's share.  Together, the many instances of this type throughout Genesis continue to point to the greatest reversal of all, which is only understood in Jesus!

The emotional reunion of Joseph & his brothers; Joseph loads his brothers down with gifts and encourages them to bring his father back to enjoy all the good things of Egypt. In this, we see Jesus longing to welcome all who are His into His bountiful Kingdom.

Joseph has a plan to keep Benjamin with him, but Judah steps in to protect his brother on his father's account. Joseph, Judah & Benjamin "team up" to put forth a much fuller picture of Jesus than any of them could do on his own (overlapping typology).

Joseph's brothers come to Egypt for bread; they come before Joseph but do not recognize him; they are accused of being spies with their only chance at life being to bring their youngest brother, Benjamin, to prove their innocence.

Joseph interprets Pharoah's dreams, and is made second over all the land; his primary duty is the distribution of bread to a starving world.

When Joseph is at his lowest point in life, he meets two men; one is associated with bread and the other with wine; both are entering a very significant 3 day period which will end with one hanged on a tree and the other restored to the side of the King of the known world.  Sound familiar?

Judah gets involved in ilicit sexual contact yet receives no punishment; Joseph is falsely accused of involvement in ilicit sexual contact yet receives exile in prison.  

The most loved son of the father, who is jealously hated by his older brothers is sold and thrown into a hole in the ground where later it is discovered that he is not there anymore.  Is this really Genesis 37? 

Jacob fears from his life and is on the run again. God reiterates the promise of offspring and land to Jacob personally. Rachel dies at Bethlehem in the process of giving birth to the one Jacob calls "the son of my right hand." 

Who is the mysterious figure Jacob wrestles with overnight?  Why does Jacob walk away with a limp?  What kind of blessing does Jacob really receive from this "man"?
