Joseph Oche
Diary of Fatherhood
Hello! Welcome to my Diary of Fatherhood! My name is Joseph Oche. My wife, Patience, and I are blessed with three children. Occasionally, I’m also blessed to be a father figure to somebody. I love being a father and welcome its challenges cheerfully. Dairy of Fatherhood is a reflective journal of some of my many lightbulb moments in the journey, birthed from my hobby of thoughtful writing. It is hinged upon open, honest, humorous, and safe communication within our family, as well as on my intentional involvement in the lives of my children. May sharing my experiences inspire you!

Boys Can't Hit Girls. 15.06.2023 8:26

Thank You, Jesus × 1000. 17.01.2023 9:57
How do you share your faith with your children? This episode is an example of the different ways that I do so. John : “Why are they saying, ‘thank you, Jesus, repeatedly and you’ve been listening to it all morning? And I don’t mean it in a bad way.” Me : “I’m glad that you asked. That means you have been paying attention. Thank you. Let me first play the introduction for you and...
A Misunderstood Compliment. 11.01.2023 8:37
Ofu : “I gave a compliment to someone yesterday, and he got offended and then threw his glasses away. I was reported to my teacher, and she tried to email mom, but it didn’t go through.” Me : “I can imagine. That was a misunderstood compliment. He didn’t get it.” My son shared how he gave his classmate a rhetorical compliment, which was misunderstood. We had this conversation about using standard...
Breaking News: We Lost Papa! 03.01.2023 12:02
How I broke the news of my father's death to my children. "You know that Papa has been getting old and sickly right?" They didn't acknowledge it. They were just astounded. So I continued: "He fell sick last weekend and didn't make it. He passed on, on Wednesday." I paused for a moment to let it sink in, then nodded and added, "yeah, we lost Papa." My Fatherhood Journey. 05.08.2022 15:47
I recall that when I become a father, my aunt looked at me and said, “young dude,” as she fondly calls me, “no one can teach you how to be a father. It is something that you will learn as you go.” It was a pregnant statement that continues to be relevant as the events of my fatherhood unfold. To continue reading, please click here .
Character Formation. 17.07.2022 7:43

Dad, We Are Not In A Good Place Right Now. 08.04.2022 6:22
So, when your child tells you that they have a problem, what is your first natural response? If I’m correct, it is to swoop on the problem and help them fix it. Right? Well, recently, I was caught up in the same mindset. John is the president of a youth club, where he commands the respect of members and adult leaders. To continue reading please click here .
That's Why I'm Not Hugging You As Much. 01.04.2022 8:58
This one is about one of the many times that I blew a parenting opportunity. So, I hope you will extend some grace to me. Once again, it involves Ofu, my strong-willed child. He left his plate and cup on the dining table after lunch to go and play on his device. When I noticed them, I said, “Ofu, can you clean up after yourself and put away your plate and cup?” He just flared up and threw a fit. I...
You Look More Tired Than Usual. 25.03.2022 7:35
I picked up Agbenu from school after she stayed back for drama rehearsals. She was not looking so upbeat. We greeted each other after she got into the car. Then I said, “you look more tired than usual. Are you hungry?” Click here to continue reading
Son, Commitment Is Hard But Very Rewarding. 11.03.2022 8:10
I am a member of the Kolbe Prison Ministries and had scheduled to visit our brothers in prison on Saturday, August 14, 2021. I committed to it in July. As our children prepared to resume school in Fall for the new school year, we also started receiving their calendar of activities. The first parent empowerment forum for John’s school was also scheduled for the same day as my prison visit. I was in...
Why Are We Not Allowed To Sleep Over In Our Friends’ Houses? 08.02.2022 8:22
While driving from John’s scouting activity to the barbershop, he said: “Dad, I have a question.” Me : “Go on.” John : “I have asked mom this question before, but she’s not been able to answer it to make me understand. Why are we not allowed to sleep over in our friends’ houses?” Me : “There are several reasons. ...to continue reading, please click here .
Don't Sweat It. Just Say, "I Don't Believe You." 03.02.2022 9:54
It’s one of those dragging mornings again with Ofu, my self-declared “not-a-morning-person” son. And yes, Sweetheart and I have had several burnouts with him. Ofu prefers to share bathrooms with us instead of with his siblings. So, his towel and toiletries are in our bathroom. When he woke this morning, he went into our bathroom, stayed there for a while, then left and went to the game room and st...
Minding The Gap With Father's Affirmations. 26.01.2022 9:32
“I didn’t grow up having that kind of relationship with my father.” “Every lady wants to be complimented.” The first of the above was a lady’s response to what I thought should have been an endearing moment between a father and his daughter. Immediately, I perceived a relationship gap! The second was another lady’s remark after receiving a compliment. To me, that highlighted the need for affirmati...
John's First Homecoming: The Mission of How to Impress A Lady Begins. 14.10.2021 10:40
This is one of those times that, as a parent, I do more of the talking. Sweetheart and I were going to drop John off at his First Homecoming. Sweetheart had earlier "occupied the passenger seat" and said this final pep talk (if you like) will be mine to handle. So, I took the driver seat and began: "Remember all our conversations about relationships with girls. The number one thing they need from...
I Told Him That He's Perfect Just The Way He Is. 07.10.2021 7:15
I Told Him That He's Perfect Just The Way He Is. On our way to dropping Ofu in school this morning, I asked about his friend (name withheld for privacy), whom I last remembered was yet to resume this school year. Ofu: "I think he must have left Holmsley." Me: "Really? Why?" Ofu: "He felt unsafe because they called him..." Me: "Oh no. That's not nice and, it must have hurt his feelings." Ofu: "Yes....
I Knew That There Was A Lesson To It! 30.09.2021 8:39
Sweetheart had an early morning appointment, so she woke early and left. So, I did morning devotions by myself and, this is not unusual depending on our schedules. When I get home from work very late at night, I tend to sleep a little longer into the morning if I don’t have an early appointment. If Sweetheart has an early appointment on one of those mornings then, I get to do morning devotions by...
Mom, Please I Want To Take The Credit For My Work. 25.08.2021 9:38
After I published my book, Diary of Fatherhood (Series One), someone asked me why I didn’t include my wife’s stories in it. Well, I responded by with, “if I did, then it would no longer be a fatherhood but, a parenting journal.” That is not to minimize the influence of Sweetheart on our joint parenting adventure or even on my fatherhood journey. If anything, she probably has more stories to share...
That's What's We Do. We Solve Problems. 05.08.2021 7:53
Ofu received an Xbox gift card as one of his birthday gifts. He accidentally destroyed some parts of the code while scratching off the cover with scissors. I noticed that he walked away sadly to his room and asked what was wrong. Then he told me what happened. I empathized with him and said that I will try to fix it. I called Microsoft customer support but, it was past their business hours. Fortun...
Opportunities for Improvement. 08.06.2021 6:27
On our way back home from Agbenu and Ofu’s swimming lesson, I asked about their progress. Agbenu : “It’s going ok but today I noticed that I need to beat with the whole of my legs not just my feet.” Me : “Ok. Ofu, how about you?” Ofu : “Good. My speed is getting better with my front strokes. But I did something bad with my backstroke.” Me : “What happened?” Ofu : “My belly was under the water and...
