In our passage this week, Jesus calls His followers, “friends.” What an amazing thought, that you and I, if we are followers of Jesus, might be called friends by the Son of God! If you don’t know Jesus as friend but have only ever known him as Lord and Savior, Master and Creator, you are missing out on so much that God desires for you.  John 15:12-17  will help you understand why. 

As we resume our study of John, we come to a metaphor for life in Christ. Through the image of the vine and the branches, Jesus will show us that if we want spiritual vitality, if we want to bear fruit, and if we want to live without guilt and condemnation and shame and feeling like we can’t do enough, we must be connected to Him.

Our next passage is one that beckons the disciple of Jesus into a deeper, bolder, bigger faith. As the band kept marching toward the cross, Jesus knew what lay ahead and the challenges they would face, so He moved to get them ready by inviting them to take their faith to the next level and to watch what God would do.

In our passage this week, Jesus moves to comfort His disciples with the knowledge that though He was leaving, He would return. That return is something we still await today as we eagerly look to the fulfillment of this promise. In the meantime,  John 14:1-7  provides three encouragements to the soul looking for Christ’s return.

Coming into the Upper Room no one would have questioned Peter’s loyalty to Jesus. In fact, he’ll even draw his sword to defend him in when the Jews come to arrest Him in the garden. So how are we to understand his denials? How does one go from pledging his life to his Savior to denying he ever had anything to do with him in just a matter of hours?

Judas is gone, and with his departure there falls almost a sense of relief as Jesus now turns to the remaining eleven to prepare them for what lay ahead.
