Tonight our Big Wednesday activities resume with only five weeks to go in the semester.  This means we’re going to move FAST, so buckle up and be ready as we cover the 17th and 18th centuries tonight.  The Reformation produces major and lasting changes to the Western world – some good and some not so good. 

Tonight we turn our focus (finally!) to the reformation, the impact of Martin Luther, and the recovery of a conscience captive to the Word of God.  While we’ve felt in very unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory, tonight you’ll begin to see how the conviction of Luther and the reformers set off a chain reaction that still shapes the way we worship, think, and live today. 

Tonight we jump back into our timeline, covering the “Late Middle Ages.”  We’ll talk about the Black Plague, the rise of nationalism, a moment in history in which there were three popes (!), and some of the early reformers.  When everything falls apart we’ll see how God uses that to create a hunger for change and a desire for a true and more biblical faith. 

We’ve been doing “flyovers” of long stretches of church history in recent weeks.  Tonight, we get to shift gears a bit for a “special edition.”  With Saint Patrick’s Day on Friday, we’re going to cover the REAL story of Saint Patrick and Irish Christianity tonight.  Instead of going wide, we’ll go deeper into the story of one people group and one person.  It should be both fun...

Tonight we cover the “High Middle Ages” (1034-1303 AD) and we’ll tackle the Crusades, the rise of key monastic movements, and more.  As we go, we’ll continue to grapple with the tension between the power and influence of the church during the middle ages as contrasted with the biblical vision of the Kingdom of God given to us by Jesus.
