This is the last public miracle before Jesus' betrayal and his death on the cross. It was the height of Jesus’ ministry. He was on trend! This miracle was so impactful that it spurred the Jews on to want to kill Jesus. John 12:10-11 tells us the chief priests wanted to kill Lazarus because this miracle brought so many to believe in Jesus.

While Jesus was preaching in Galilee a nobleman (royal official) from the city of Capernaum approached and begged Jesus to come heal his dying son. Instead of going to Capernaum, Jesus told the nobleman to go back home. His son would live. The nobleman “took Jesus at his word” and returned home to find his son well. Believe in Jesus.

On the surface, this miraculous event seems simple and not especially significant. But when you get to know the story’s details and what they symbolize, you’ll see why it’s important.

Worry can come to distract, disturb, detour and discourage believers from their purpose and steal their peace. In this passage of scripture Christ teaches us that we can trust Him with our cares.

Fasting was an expected spiritual discipline in both the Old and New Testament. In fact, we see examples of fasting in the Bible from several significant biblical figures. Moses, for example, fasted at least two recorded 40-days periods (Deuteronomy 9:18-19, Exodus 34:28). Jesus also fasted for 40 days and nights (Matthew 4:2).

Advent is a season of waiting. The expectation of God's promise fulfilled. It's about slowing down to remember the wonder of Christ coming. It's an invitation to slow down and embrace an unhurried pace. We wait with patience and hope.
