Have you ever been angry with God? In this message, Pastor Pete digs deep into the various reasons why we get angry with God. He unpacks not only our distorted views of God and His character, but also challenges us to recognize the idols of our lives, when, like Jonah, we feel that God has not been fair and just in His actions.  

God displays His wonderful mercy to us by being slow to anger, by abounding in steadfast love and in relenting from sending disasters. As followers of Christ, let us allow His mercy to greatly impact our lives, encouraging us to be patient and kind to each other, to value others and to pray for the ability to love, just as He loves.

When Jonah shared his message to the Ninevites, the entire city, including the King repented and turned to God. In this message, Pastor Pete unpacks what true repentance consists of – a work of God in men’s heart, which enables them to turn from sin and to Him instead, to stop pursuing sin and to pursue Him instead.

Pastor Jessica unpacks God’s pursuit of man, His desire for us to have a new beginning and for our will to be in line with His. Our repentance and decision to obey Him should trigger a change in behaviour, leading to salvation and to sanctification.

In this message, Pastor Pete reminds us that God’s plans do not change. He gives second chances so that people and nations can be saved. However, the sobering truth is that the day of the Lord will come, and second chances will become last chances. This thought should inspire us, Christians, to be more mission minded.

Where do you turn to when you are in a tight spot? How do you relate to God in these moments? When the prophet, Jonah, hit rock bottom and had very little power to change his situation, he cried out to God. What looked like the end for him became, in fact, a moment of salvation and restoration.  

The book of Jonah is not simply about God’s heart for Jonah and Nineveh. He was also concerned for the sailors. He used Jonah (despite his disobedience) to bring the message of salvation, so that they too would have the opportunity to respond. Are we willing to be present in people’s storms and point to Jesus?

Pastor Pete’s message is a reminder that God, in His sovereignty, allows storms to happen in life. Those who don’t know Him have the opportunity to cry out to Him when the storms reveal their brokenness, and those of us, who like Jonah, are asleep need to be awake to the reality that the world is in need of the Saviour.

Pastor Pete’s message unpacks Jonah’s rejection of Nineveh, his choice of Tarshish and the seemingly “providential” opportunities at Joppa. It is a soul-searching message that encourages us to consider our motives, and not to justify wrong choices and disobedience with supposed “signs” from God. 

Like Jonah, we are all inclined to mistrust God, disobey Him and run from Him. But God’s Word to us, as it was to Jonah, is always a word of love, wanting our heart not just our deeds, and urging us to surrender fully to Him in order to lead holy lives.

Pastor Solomon shares his story, from losing his father during childhood to becoming a leader of a network of churches in India. He has a consistent heart for prayer and for people coming out of poverty and oppression.

In this message, Pastor Pete reminds us of the purpose and values of City on a Hill, and of our belief that God has called us this year to be ‘established and strengthened’. In light of this, he shares some updates on the significant steps we are taking as a church family.
