In John 19, Jesus is on the way to the cross. On the way, Jesus has a very interesting and very relatable interchange with a guy named Pontius Pilate. Pilate asks Jesus, "What is truth?" This is a question that our world is wrestling with today perhaps more than ever. Sometimes it is very hard for us to delineate between our desires, our perspectives, our preferences, and THE truth. The reality is...

In John 18, after 5 chapters in the upper room with his disciples, Jesus is now headed toward the Garden of Gethsemane, where the final path to the cross begins. As Jesus gets arrested in the garden, Jesus announces, "I AM HE." When he says this, the army that came to arrest him falls down, as Jesus is truly announcing, "I AM GOD." Jesus was making it very clear who was in control in this moment....

Have you ever spent time around people who only have moments, days, or weeks to live? Because of what I do for a living, I have. It's always a gift to me. It's fascinating to me what people choose to talk about and not talk about in these moments. People rarely talk about their net worth, their career, or their yacht. Rather they talk about the people they love, their regrets, whether or not they...

As humans we love beginnings, they’re exciting, filled with dreams and possibilities; marriages, new houses, jobs… And we love good endings- a finished product, graduation, retirement…  they’re a sign of completion, arrival at out desired destination. But if we had the opportunity most of us would elect to skip the middle part. That messy, muddy middle part of our stories that aren’t perfectly cur...

We've spent the last few months making our way through the book of John in our series, This Is The Way. We've examined the life and the way of Jesus, and soon we'll be looking at his death and resurrection. But sandwiched between those things is the account of the last night that Jesus spends with his disciples, in John 13-17. This is no doubt an extremely anxious time for everyone involved as Jes...

This Sunday we continued our series “This Is The Way” and dove head first into John 13. After a long day in the hot middle eastern sun, 12 sweaty men, walking in their sandals down the dusty roads of Jerusalem were greeted by their rabbi for dinner. The teacher proceeded to put on a towel, get on his hands and knees and wash their filthy feet. This rabbi was the King of the universe, God in the fl...

In John 15, Jesus gives us one of his 7 "I am" statements found in the book of John with, "I am the Vine." What's unique about this statement is that Jesus also tells us who we are, "the branches." A branch's job is to bear fruit. We all want to bear fruit in life but our definition of fruit and God's definition of fruit is often very different. Because of that, God will often cut off the fruit we...

This is the Way! Our series through the gospel of John does not say “A” way, but “The” Way. Why? Because Jesus only offers us one way to follow Him, one way to salvation, one way to the life that we dream about. We think we can pick and choose the parts we like and don’t like about following Jesus and still experience the life He promises. We create our own way, another way, “A” way, and then wond...

Lazarus' death was felt deeply by his friends and loved ones, and the interaction that Jesus has with Lazarus' sisters proves that they had resigned themselves to the fact that this was the end. But this miracle that Jesus performs displayed how even death itself could not stop His power. This Sunday we unpacked this story in a message called, “Back to Life” with the hope that we would be encourag...

Happy Father’s Day! This week we unpacked one of the most famous examples of a father's love as we looked at the story of the Prodigal Son. While so much attention is often placed on the lavishness and extravagance with which the lost son lived his life, part of what we learn is that God, our father, is equally lavish and extravagant in the way he shows his love for us. In this way it's actually t...

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do bad things happen at all? How do we handle suffering in this world and in our daily lives? In light of all the bad and suffering, does God still work? Do miracles still happen? This Sunday we dove into John chapter 9. Through one man’s encounter with Jesus, we see amidst our suffering God can use it and perhaps we are just a miracle waiting to happen...

The first three Gospels in the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, spend much time telling us WHAT Jesus did. But the book of John is preoccupied with something else. John will tell us over and over again WHO Jesus is. In fact, there are 7 famous "I am" statements in John about Jesus, and one of my very favorites is, "I am the Good Shepherd."  In reality, Jesus is not the only shepherd we can...

Throughout history civilizations have thrived upon the ability to secure the most precious resource for people - water. Where good water supplies are, people flourish and prosperity follows. Where water is scarce and polluted, people grow sick and things decay. For most of us, we have access to as much clean and purified water as we want. We can turn on a tap, we have filters to deliver pure good...

We are back in the book of John in our series, “This Is The Way”! Isn't it interesting that the easier we try to make life, the harder it often gets. There's plenty of voices out there that promise the easy way to happiness, the easy way to love, and the easy way to pleasure. Jesus teaches us that there are plenty of fools out there who would love to follow that path. But he calls believers to a d...
