A Metis leader, he would spend his life trying to preserve the culture and land of his people, while his requests were ignored by the Canadian government. A dropped pipe on a hay stack would lead to the worst disaster in St. John's history. For two years from 1936 to 1938, over 1,500 Canadians would travel to Spain, often on their own, to fight against Fascists in Spain during the Spanish Civil War.
