On Dec. 6, 1917, two ships collided in Halifax Harbour. One of those ships was loaded with explosives, which ignited, producing the largest manmade explosion in human history to that point. In seconds, the 2.9 kiloton explosion killed 2,000 people, injured 9,000, and destroyed 12,000 buildings in a 2.6 kilometre radius. On June 19, 1914, 237 men went down into the Hillcrest Mine at 7 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., the entire area was shaken by a huge explosion from the mine. By the end of the day, only 48 men had emerged alive. It remains to this day the deadliest mining disaster in Canadian history.
