Boys' Bible Study

A lot of the films we cover are distinctly American, linking Christianity with patriotism and American individualism. But BEYOND THE MASK is fitting for our 4th of July special   - powdered wigs, gunpowder, and plots of treason abound as a masked vigilante aids the founding fathers in their quest for American independence from the British empire. Protagonist William Reynolds, an agent for the East...

(Anecdotally, almost all of our personal friends who grew up in the church knew and loved this film as kids.) Released on a VHS tape put out by the Mormon...

Adapted from a YA fantasy novel written by the director (Chris Heimerdinger) himself, PASSAGE TO ZARAHEMLA takes teen fantasy tropes - such as unlocked supernatural abilities, time travel, and star-crossed lovers - and places them within a story fully based on the teachings of the Book of Mormon. Especially of note here is the alternate history of the Americas purported by Mormon lore - Nephites,...

A cherubic twink musician named Adam loses his way and goes goth, much to the horror of his Christian father Joseph. Joseph journeys to a seedy big city club called Purgatory to rescue him - but the literal Devil is working against him at every turn, tempting him with earthly lusts. Fortunately, a mysterious team of archangels who are also jazz musicians are lurking behind the scenes, pulling the...

Smartphones. Social media. "Likes". "Retweets". We are more "connected" than ever before - but at what cost? The year is 2018. We are hearing more and more about a new plane of reality that many are calling the "Internet". Former child star and prolific Christian auteur Kirk Cameron's most recent project as a producer is CONNECT, a documentary about how Christian parents need to rise to the occasi...

Rational-minded people, rise up! Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher's RELIGULOUS is a documentary about how religion is "detrimental to the progress of humanity". In a series of on-location interviews, Maher sets up false pretenses in order to interact with a variety of religious people who assume good faith, only to get "gotcha'd" by Maher's noxiously smug tone. It's troubling that whi...

This famous firefighter drama starring Kirk Cameron has one of the most iconic anti-porn storylines in the Christian genre, with an explosive conclusion - but that's just scratching the surface of FIREPROOF, an entertaining yet surprisingly dense offering from the prolific Kendrick Brothers that did quite well at the box office upon its release in 2008. Not only was it the highest grossing indie f...

In this deceptively charming yet complicated film by Russell S. Doughton Jr., the director of the very popular apocalyptic Christian film A THIEF IN THE NIGHT, a ragtag group of lost and lonely youth are pushed to the brink when their after school basketball practice is cancelled for two entire months so the gym can be taken over by a famous Christian puppeteer. In a fit of vengeful rage, they tra...

The Christiano Brothers are some of our favorite directors. Their highly competent but no-frills style makes them the perfect auteurs to deliver a deadly serious Christian message about the dangers of sin and hell. But that doesn't mean they can't have a little fun! This comedy whodunit CRIME OF THE AGE shows the Brothers getting a little loose with the messaging, yet somehow still creating a film...

We turn our eyes away from the word of God in order to taste the sinful delights of the secular realm by watching HELLRAISER III: HELL ON EARTH (1992). This almost-Christian movie warns us against the pursuit of pleasure by portraying sex, rock and roll, television, and art as gateways to the demonic. Pinhead is back, looking better than ever, and this time using direct references to biblical text...

This surprisingly reverent softcore porn with Christian themes presents three erotic, avant-garde vignettes based on Bible stories. Director Wakefield Poole, known for his hardcore gay sex films that did well at box offices during the heyday of big budget sex films in the early 1970s, tried to appeal to a more mainstream midnight movie audience with this heterosexual softcore take on the Bible. Un...

Happy Easter! As a follow up to our Passion of the Christ episode, we review another cinematic retelling of Jesus's life and death made within the Hollywood machine - Garth Davis's MARY MAGDALENE, starring real life couple Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus and Rooney Mara as the titular Mary Magdalene. We have some very strong words for this film, which we see as all aesthetics and no substance. Cold digit...

Our appreciation for him, like most other things we cover on the show, is a confusing mixture of irony and sincerity that we ourselves struggle to...

Mel Gibson's now notorious cinematic take on the biblical Passion sparked a national conversation in its day for its brutal, unflinching depiction of the torture and death of Jesus. Major studios wouldn't back the film, finding Gibson's directorial decisions risky, so Gibson funded it himself and paid off in a big way with a surprise box office smash. But how does THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST hold up...

The co-founder of the Satanic Temple joins us to give his expert opinion on the depiction of Satan in this psychedelic modernized adaptation of the Gospel story of Jesus's temptation in the desert. In Miracle Man, "JC" is a construction company owner who magically heals the sick at his downtown prayer meetings — meanwhile, the devil is a floating head whose idea of the "ultimate sin" is taking the...

In this infamous comedy with Christian themes, rich and despicable video game company CEO Archie Channing (portrayed by Gary Busey) suddenly dies in a car accident. After begging angels in heaven for a second chance, he returns to earth as QUIGLEY, a cute little Pomeranian, and attempts to right his wrongs despite being limited by his new dog body. Gary Busey's captivating performance, and directo...

We talk to the director, editor and co-writer of the REVELATION ROAD trilogy. Gabriel Sabloff is the go-to "action" guy for Pure Flix, often directing Christian films with intricate fight scenes and choreographed stunts. He's a longtime collaborator with actor and Pure Flix founder David A.R. White, but Gabriel's interests go far beyond the Christian genre, and it's easy to pick up on the horror a...
