Boomer Nation

The music from the Boomer era takes us back to a time and place we remember as though it were yesterday. Teenagers, a high school dance, a restaurant, a car, "our song," thousands of memories of a very special time.  We early Boomers are very lucky to have lived during that incredible slice of American history, and the music was an important part of it.  I'm happy to have Spotify wh...

This week we look at a bit of a slant on the news, sort of an "are you kidding me?" Then we take a closer look at the price of gasoline.  Wondering why, when a bomb hits a tanker 5000 miles away, the price of gas goes up $.30 a gallon 15 minutes later at my neighborhood gas station. Sheeese.

The Fourth week of July has some very pertinent news for the over 65 crowd in the Page 4 Department.   Also, along with our weekly Scam alert, a great look at AI for the Boomer population. This is a terrific tool to use frequently.

News and views for us Boomers. What happened during the fourth week of July over the entire era? Under the Hood?  Take a look and you'll find AI in plain terms for a very practical understanding.

A new format, focusing on the 70 million Baby  Boomers out there. News that has an impact on us.  Each week we'll have a new subject that we all experience to one degree or another.  This week it's Scams, how to recognize it and what to do about it. Then, a lighthearted review of the 50's and what we remember, and don't forget, getting old is better than the alternative.

A focused look at the day itself, the spreading of the news, the colonists' reaction and how the news was received in England. An incredibly bold idea and a gamble that took the ultimate courage.

250 years ago  a group of men notified the King of England that they declared the 13 colonies were then an independent entity on their own. They were no longer a part of England in any way.  That notification became known as The Declaration of Independence. The date was July 4th, 1776. It became the birth of The United States of America. The colonials realized that they were taking on the most for...

From one game in 1845 in Hoboken, NJ, to an international pastime  with hundreds of thousands of players and millions of spectators....all in 55 years. Yikes, How could that have happened?  It's an incredible story that shows what a great game it is and the development process that made the game what it is today.

A few more rules, Pitcher to home, that is, and 60'6", changes the game. Massive growth continues in spectators, cities and schools.  Japan is No. 1 internationally while Cuba and Mexico are not far behind.

The Civil War brought baseball to a screeching halt for the first year of the war. then, soldiers played baseball in their downtime. The game was taught to those from the Midwest, such as Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. It turned out to be a catalyst for the Baseball's growth.

The years between 1845 and 1860 were crucial in creating the foundation of the game that actually became known nationally as baseball. The Knickerbocker Baseball Club in 1845  created the first 20 rules of baseball. A bit later the National Association of Baseball Players in 1858 added a few more rules to define baseball as the sport destined to become the national game we have today. It wasn&apos...

Baseball, the best game of all and the most difficult to play at the highest levels.  And I prove it without a doubt.  A short analysis of a routine major league pitch is all that is needed but a bit of icing on the cake adds to the proof.   While there's no doubt about it, I couldn't help but wonder where did it all come from? Who decided what?  Civil War? What Civil War?  There's...

Can there beany more evidence or proof that this "slice" of history is the most advanced and productive in human history?   No, not a chance. On to another great "slice" of American history.

'63 Was a year that went from "Camelot" to reality in one horrific moment.  The country changed, and yes, the world changed.  It went from disbelief.......to denial...to shock...to sorrow......to what happens now.  '64 will be the definition of a turning point and Viet Nam will be at the center. We Boomers know what follows, the darkest chapter in our history.

The '61 Bay of Pigs fiasco seemed to give Russia's Nikita Kruschev enough strength to install offensive ICBMs in Cube. These missiles could reach anywhere in the Eastern US. A toe to toe standoff raised concerns of a nuclear attack. An agreement seemed out of reach until, that is, the US pulled its missiles out of a secret missile base in Turkey. After that, it was not so secret.

In many ways '61 carries on the manner of the Fab '50s.  The economy, leisure time, advances in science, medicine and technology.  Yet, the future looks a bit threatening.  The Bay of Pigs failure, Castro cozying up to Russia, Yuri Gagarin in space, a failed summit in Vienna, the building of the Berlin Wall, and last but not least, continuing buildup of our resources in Viet Nam. Where i...

!960 continued to be a great year, not only "plowing new ground," but also expanding many of the discoveries and innovations of the past decade.   The 1960 Olympics provided a shocker in the Marathon and a story that will last forever.

"59 continues great progress on discoveries and developments from earlier in the Boomer Era.  We "early boomers" have become teenagers with a voice of their own and a force to be reckoned with. The 60s will bring a new and different life for us all.

A bit of conversation and conclusions about the Season and the spirit that shows its presence at this time of year.

The country has undergone a sea change.  The teenagers have established a foothold that they will not give up.  Time for the grownups to adjust to a new culture.

No matter who you are or where you are, this is a day to give sincere gratitude for our blessings.

...........and the changes are here to stay.  The grown-ups need to change or get lost in the shuffle!

Advances in medicine and science continue, but music rocks the foundations of society!

"55 starts out a bit on the standard historical basis, but ends with a change that America will never retreat from.  America goes through a sea change.
