When people are being taught a lie, there is nothing like the pure word of God to clear things up and make the enemy mad enough to torture and kill. Showing that he who controls the flow of information holds tightly to that power in the past just as much as the present, many faithful men died to make the scripture available to every man. The first half of this chapter documents how that played on...

In this letter, Paul explains what good works mean, gives examples of foundational good works, and warns about men who trick people into divisions based on the commandments of men. He tells Titus to contradict such men and sharply reprove them, so that they can be sound in the faith. Through it all, he reminds him of our eternal hope, which we are looking for. Read from the World English Bible. Al...

In this section of chapter ten, events in Geneva and France show how the distortions of human philosophy imposed over Biblical truth result in conflict and death for Protestant communities, both by those claiming Protestant authority and those determined to solidify the Roman Catholic political power base. In this last section of chapter nine, misunderstandings based on rumor and questionable characters are allowed to create division among Christians. Some decide to abstain from the Lord's Supper and even baptism to avoid conflict. And many continue to be killed for disagreeing with government or Roman Catholic approved religion. Paul writes because he is concerned the relatively new Christians in Thessalonika will be discouraged due to their intense persecution. He compares what they are going through to the unbelieving Jews in Jerusalem killing Christ and the prophets, so we know it was serious. He draws a clear distinction between this persecution and the wrath of God, which the Thessalonian Christians can be sure they...

In this reading we learn more of the group in Münster who, while they were besieged, formed a very strange and unBiblical kingdom. The enemies of true Christians used this distortion to paint all Christians as vile. However, the author follows this up with some solid examples of Christian writings that prove otherwise. Paul doesn't mince any words confronting those who try to compel the Galatians to follow the law. He even gives examples of publicly calling out Peter, plus saying the false brothers might as mutilate themselves further! There are some parts that people misunderstand about Israel and the church, but given Paul's plain speaking no hidden metaphors need to be read into the letter. Read from the Worl...

It is sobering to realize that James is talking to those with the Spirit dwelling in them when he says there are wars among them. However, it is all in order to point them toward drawing near to God and praying with submission. We cannot have a friendship with the worldly system while we do this. What if you knew that as soon as you repented and believed on Jesus Christ you were at great risk of death? What if you knew they would take your children from you and give all your worldly goods to do great harm to other believers? These are the intense circumstances of many true Christians in the mid 1500's. Cruelty done by those in power who themselves claimed the name of Christian, but only fo...

The Anabaptists is a new name given to true Christian believers by those who wanted to make it acceptable to persecute them, though there was nothing new about these believers. Even while noting the patient and kind conduct of such believers, those in authority deemed it "best" to run them out of town or kill them. The letter from James in like a quick, intense course on how to live a Christian life in true faith, which is perfected by obedience in words and conduct. But we can only do that if we begin with the foundation of being a bond servant of Jesus Christ. And when we do, we can have the joy of turning other sinners from error. Scripture read from the World English Bible. Some references to the New Kin...

The modern version of church is not exactly unBiblical, but the things we are told to do when we fellowship with believers are usually not easily done in the religious services and organizations that have become so normal. Those who run such institutions tend to label those who fellowship in homes as rebellious or at risk of heresy, but what if the home is actually the better option for Biblical f...
