The passage in Acts today is really a primer on how to handle internal conflict and growth in the church. This morning, we will look at the challenges that it highlights and the solutions it proposes for service in the church.

The miracle and the message go together here. While the miracle was meant to combat the suffering of the lame man, and blessed him greatly, it pointed to even more than the healing itself. It pointed to the Messiah’s Glory,  The Moment to Come, The Greater Need, The Grief of the Suffering Servant. Let’s look at these four truths by connecting the miracle to the message.

It is hard for us to understand how different and radical the early church looked in their culture because we have inherited their world. And yet, rather than sacrifice, service and loving our enemies, we seem to be returning to a world where might makes right, where power is everything. This morning, we are reminded WHAT DEVOTION to Christ is to look like, and HOW DEVOTION is possible. 

This Sunday, we look at Peter's first sermon, where he explains what is meant by this outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Peter gives a Christ exalting clear sermon that interprets the Old Testament with a decidedly Christological exegesis. We now live in the long age of opportunity between Christ’s two comings, where we are called to live in His powerful PRESENCE as faithful WITNESSES.

This Sunday we look at the day of Pentecost which was the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise that the Holy Spirit would come. Let’s look at the three accompanying miraculous SIGNS and how they empower God’s people to be a GOSPEL OUTPOST for the nations.

Friendship is not a luxury but a necessity. And yet, so many of us struggle with the concept in our modern world and a loneliness epidemic plagues our young men. Friendship is not a side benefit, but it is central to how God made us. This morning we want to see that from the garden to the cross that we were made by a relational God to be relational as friends.

This July, we set out on a road trip through some Psalms. In Psalm 117, at this outdoor service, we are challenged to look beyond our walls to the great reach of the Gospel to all the nations. God’s steadfast love and faithful, fresh promises are for everyone! But the exhortation could remain largely empty unless we enter into the obligation to live out the Good News.

As we close the Sermon on the Mount we look one more time to answer the question, who is this preacher? We will see that Jesus didn’t preach so we would marvel at his speaking skills, but so that we would submit to his AUTHORITY and OBEY. But why would we do that? Let’s find out by looking at why the crowds gave Jesus a standing ovation.

Neither professing Jesus as Lord, nor hearing the Gospel, guarantees you are in God’s Kingdom and will stand on the final judgment day. While both are necessary for salvation, what guarantees that we will stand on the final day, like the wise man who built his house upon the Rock, is a profession partnered with true works of obedience from the heart. Everyone naturally is heading towards destruction on the broad, easy path. Jesus, in his kindness, tells and shows us the narrow pathway that leads to life. We must find the narrow gate, the narrow path. False prophets will arise, trying to steer you towards the broad path to destruction. We can recognize them by the produce of their lives.
