A Minute With Coach Riggs

The Top 25 T.R. Miller football teams of all time continues as Coach Riggs talks about the amazing 1941 T.R. Miller team. Amid the threat of World War II, Coach Ben McLeod's squad ripped off the finest defensive performance in the 100 year history of the school. The offense was led by Hosea Rodgers and W.J. Monk, who baffled defenses with their running and passing abilities. 

Coach Riggs and his guest Scott Sasser discuss the 1995 T.R. Miller football team. This squad was ranked highest of all the Miller teams that played in the playoff system but did not win a state championship, losing to Alexandria. The 18-13 loss ended the Tigers 28 game win streak. 

Coach Riggs and his guests Ron Gibson and David Jennings discuss the great season of 1990 at Miller in which the team set the school record for rushing yards. The Tigers went 13-1, losing in the 4A State Championship Game 28-27 to Deshler in Tuscumbia in overtime.

The Top 25 list gets closer and closer to the top as Coach Riggs reveals the #7 team of all time - the 2000 Miller Tigers in Episode 10 of this season. This squad finished the regular season with an 8-2 record, but went on a playoff tear and won the 4A State Championship.  The Tigers beat Fayette County in Birmingham in the finals behind Rayvon Howard's 288 yards rushing, still a state 4A record....

Episode #9 of season 2 continues the Top 25 T.R. Miller football teams of all time with the #8 team. Coach Riggs and his guests discuss this Miller squad that statistically has the second best offense in the 98 year football history of the school as well as the players that made this team great.

The Top 25 continues as Coach Riggs discusses the #9 Miller team of all time - the 2003 Miller Tigers. He iand David Jennings are joined by guests Brad Lannom and Trent Davidson who talk about their teammates and some of the big games.  Brad and Trent also discuss missed curfew, haircuts, and the famous "butt pad' incident. 

In Episode #7, the Top 25 list has made it to the Top 10 TRM football teams of all time. The 1946 Miller Tigers, coached by Hal Wyatt, start the Top 10. Coach Riggs welcomes guest Brad Byrne as they discuss the '46 team and the life of his father Scotty Byrne, who was a key member of the 1946 squad.

Coach Riggs discusses the Michigan sign stealing scandal, his experiences with sign stealing in high school football, and a scandal from college football in the early 1960s that threatened to derail one of the game's greatest coaches.

Former T. R. Miller Tigers Tony Burnham and Michael English who broadcast the Tiger games each Friday night come on the podcast with Coach Riggs to discuss the 2023 edition of the Miller squad. Tony and Michael talk about the names, the games, and the plays from the first 5 contests and preview what should be an exciting second half of the season for the Tigers.

In episode #4 of the second season, Coach Riggs relates the progress of the TRM Top 25 before he discusses his belief that "sooner or later everybody gets humbled in football". He also talks about some of the years high school football issues and solves the problem of the Alabama quarterback issue.

Coach Riggs is joined by the quarterback of the #11 team, who talks the motivation for the great season, his teammates, and the big games. Listening to this former signal caller talk about the spirit and enthusiasm of the Miller crowds that season will send a chill down the spine of all the T.R. Miller people.

The Top 25 continues as Coach Riggs welcomes guests David Jennings, Greg Pendergrass and Walter Lewis as they discuss the #12 team of all time. This group gets off the main road more than once as they discuss coaches, teammates, games, specific plays, going to school at T.R. Miller in the late 70s and what it was like growing up in Brewton, Alabama.

Season 2 of "A Minute With Coach Riggs" begins as the TRM Top 10 Football list continues. Coach Riggs discusses the #13 team of all time with two former Miller players, who started their careers as Tiger managers.
