10 Minutes with Jesus

Today is the feast of St Augustine! He recognised his need to be shaped - another way of saying he needed good formation. We also need people in our lives and good things that form us well. We pray about this together today.

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment."  This commandment is lived out in a practical way by doing all sorts things throughout the day for the love of God.  To do this, making a good morning offering is a great start.

What makes Nathaniel so attractive to Jesus, and to each one of us? His sincerity of heart, and the fact that he recognizes and accepts our Lord so immediately and intensely. May we emulate him in this.

The parable of the Laborers in the Vinyard is not about the pay at all. Idleness is contrary to our human dignity and the landowner is actively trying to bring laborers into his vinyard for their good and not for pay for profit. We too should see our work as it’s own reward and not do it primarily for pay nor should we “work for the weekend”.

Today, the Church offers us the memorial of the Queenship of Mary. It is a joy to recall that from our Baptism we are made members of the Holy Family: Joseph the Patriarch-Foster Father of the Lord, Jesus our King, and Mary our Queen. On the feast of St Pius X we refelect on his own ardent love for Jesus and how that helps us to prepare to receive him in Holy Communion

Jesus shows the Canaanite woman tough love. He grants her petition, but he makes her ask persistently. In the end, she gets her miracle, a compliment, and an increase of faith and humility. She was an unlikely recipient of God's grace.

Mt 19:13-15 - Jesus teaches the apostles and us to be like children in our relationship with God along with being generous with unforeseen situations that seem to arrive at inconvenient moments.

About Jesus' statement about the indissolubility of marriage, as in the beginning. That marriage is a divine vocation, that requires preparation, and drive to renew it constantly.

Looking at the parable of the unforgiving servant shows us how much God forgives us, and how we need to learn to forgive others from the bottom of our hearts

It is well worthwhile cultivating inner serenity and silence so as to grow in intimacy with God.

Jesus laments the lack of faith of his disciples in today's Gospel. As those who are his disciples in 2023, what's our faith like?--

Claire is a beautiful example of what our Lord teaches us: "Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."

St Laurence teaches us what true wealth is: it is not earthly wealth which fades or rots; it is the poor and needy. The more we give to them, the more we earn treasure in heaven. But we must do so with a disinterested heart: loving Christ in them, and them in themselves, and not merely ‘using’ them as a means to ‘buy’ heaven.

Jesus's compliment to the Canaanite woman, "Oh woman, great is your faith," is well earned. Despite several indications to the contrary, she insists on believing in Jesus's goodness and love. We too, must exercise trust in the face of prayers apparently unanswered.

We sometimes obsess over what we eat, and lose sight of the more important elements of our spiritual health. A similar thing happened to the Pharisees, and Jesus has advice for them we can apply to ourselves.

Jesus isn't always the Jesus you want him to be. Let him be the Jesus that he is. Have faith. Only then can he work many mighty deeds in your life.
