The Dictionary

I read the English Dictionary in short sections, comment on it, make bad jokes, and sometimes sing little songs. I hope it’s more entertaining than just reading the dictionary alone. It’s an evolving project so the letter ”A” had lower quality, plus less commenting and jokes.

#D181 (discriminate to discuss) 28.01.2023

I read from discriminate to discuss.     I don't understand the discriminator. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discriminator     The weight of the discus depends on the age and sex/gender (that's a whole other conversation) but they range from 0.75 to 2 kg (1.65 to 4.41 pounds). The longest throw is by a woman, Martina Hellmann, in 1988 who unofficially threw it 78.14 meters (over 256 feet) but beca...

#D177 (discontent to discord) 24.01.2023

I read from discontent to discord.     About the company/platform "Discord": "The name Discord was chosen because it "sounds cool and has to do with talking", was easy to say, spell, remember, and was available for trademark and website. In addition, "Discord in the gaming community" was the problem they wished to solve." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discord     The word of the episode is "discop...

#D170 (disagreeable to disassemble) 17.01.2023

I read from disagreeable to disassemble.     4 year old me making things appear and disappear (including myself, kinda) with old school camera trickery (thanks Dad!). https://youtu.be/xxxWbeMhS_o     The word of the episode is "disarm".     Theme music from Tom Maslowski https://zestysol.com/     Merchandising! https://www.teepublic.com/user/spejampar     "The Dictionary - Letter A" on YouTube   "...

#D168 (dirty to disability) 15.01.2023

I read from dirty to disability.     It seems that the phrase "dirty pool" came from billiards. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/dirty_pool     Another name for Dis Pater (Roman God of the Underworld) is Rex Infernus which is objectively much cooler.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C4%ABs_Pater     The word of the episode is "dirty word". https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:English_swear_words...

#D167 (dirigible to dirty) 14.01.2023

I read from dirigible to dirty.     The "dirigible" as in "the flying balloon" is short for "dirigible balloon" which is really just "a balloon that can be steered".   https://www.etymonline.com/word/dirigible#etymonline_v_8617     The "define earth" clip is from the film WALL-E https://youtu.be/59M-t6Js6Q8     The "dirty trumpet" clip is from Wynton Marsalis. https://youtu.be/DJi8fN6hBmc     The...

#D166 (directorial to dirigible) 13.01.2023

I read from directorial to dirigible.     The word "dirge", in our current usage, basically just comes from the first word of a psalm that I think was said/sung at funerals.  https://www.etymonline.com/word/dirge#etymonline_v_8616 The audio is from possibly the most famous dirge/funeral song which is Chopin's "Funeral March". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D05AB8xs7qA     The word of the episode...

#D165 (direction cosine to directorate) 12.01.2023

#D163 (diptych to direct) 10.01.2023

I read from diptych to direct.     In olden times, kids would use a diptych filled with wax to take their school notes. Then they would heat it up so it melted when they were done. It's sad that they didn't get to keep their school notes for decades like we used to do.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diptych     The word of the episode is "direct".     Theme music from Jonah Kraut https://jonahkrau...

#D162 (diplopod to dipterocarp) 09.01.2023

#D161 (dipl- to diplopia) 08.01.2023

I read from dipl- to diplopia.     Diplococcus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplococcus     Diplodocus is named thusly because of the "double beams" on the underside of tail bones which are basically 2 parallel boney protrusions.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplodocus     "Humans are diploid organisms, normally carrying two complete sets of chromosomes in their somatic cells..." https://en.wik...

#D160 (dip to diphyodont) 07.01.2023

I read from dip to diphyodont.     Diphosgene was originally made for chemical warfare. Not cool.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphosgene     Diphteria sounds pretty terrible but there is a vaccine! Yay Science! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphtheria     I guess "diphyletic" is the same as "paraphyletic" which my brain is currently having a hard time grasping. So many words!  https://en.wikipe...

#D159 (diorama to dip) 06.01.2023

I read from diorama to dip.      As you know, Castor and Pollux (the "dioscuri") are "...an example of heteropaternal superfecundation ." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_and_Pollux     The word of the episode is "dip". What are you favorite dips to dip food into?     Theme music from Jonah Kraut https://jonahkraut.bandcamp.com/     Merchandising! https://www.teepublic.com/user/spejampar     "...

#D158 (dinucleotide to dioptric) 05.01.2023

I read from dinucleotide to dioptric.     A Diode is used in electrical thingies.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode     It looks like many stories have been written about Diomedes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diomedes     If I understand the basics, a Diopter is a unit of thickness of a lens that determines how far away from the lens the light focuses.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dioptre  ...
