The Other Half

We kick off the 2019 Halloween Spooktacular with a modern indie film called Darling, which was made in 2015! Ray is the first on our frightening guest list and he recommended this movie to us because he thought it was kinda spooky. It's a movie about a lady who has to take care of the oldest house in New York. Of course, she's driven to madness. But what is the cause behind this madness? C...

Dennis Quaid plays a knight with a dragon friend in the classically corny, Dragonheart, which actually spawned a franchise that continues to run until this day! The dragon is played by none other than Sean Connery. But the dragon doesn't look as good as Sean Connery. In fact, this dragon doesn't look great by today's standards at all, but it was impressive enough to win the Academy Awa...

If you're enjoying a walk on the beach with a loved one or doing taxes alone on a Friday night, you should always stop and think, what about Bob? This is a weird screwball comedy straight from the '90s. This is back when going to a therapist was for seriously ill people. Not just for someone doing a routine mental health check-up. The movie centers around Bob (Bill Murray) and his brand ne...

Hell or High Water is the most divisive movie we have watched for this podcast. The way we describe both halves of this movie, it sounds like we were watching completely different movies. Hell or High Water stars Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges and examines the life of two Texas outlaws. CAPITALISM is the true enemy of this movie as well as obvious metaphors. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast...

The boys got together to watch the most famous and universally loved Star Trek film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. How does this 1982 movie fair under the scrutiny of a couple of non-Trekkies? Well, Ethan is a big fan of the bug designs and Mike likes Khan a lot. That's all I can say, for more opinions, you have to listen to the episode! Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to he...

Don Bluth is here with his last movie ever, Titan A.E.! This experimental movie blends 3D environments with traditional 2D animation. Featuring the talents of Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, and John Leguizamo, Titan A.E. asks the question, what if the earth was wiped out by a crazy evil alien force made out of pure energy? If that doesn't sound enticing to you, then I don't think you'll l...

The Crow inspired a generation of goths and even WWF superstar Sting and it paved the way for the original Hot Topic before Funko Pops! This cult classic is a corny revenge tale with a lot of heart. But it's also brutal and over the top for no reason, which Ethan is surely down for. But how does this movie live up to today's standards? Does it deserve to be highly regarded or is it on famo...

How does the cultural phenomenon, Sixteen Candles hold up in 2019? We can tell you from a cultural standpoint, not well. The famous John Hughes coming of age movie stars Molly Ringwald as Samantha who is crushing on this guy named Jake. They both are not the best so it makes sense that maybe they would work together! Don't worry though the side characters totally make up for it... Check out ht...

Is this the Batman and Robin of the Fast and Furious franchise? Or the Antman and Wasp? Look we know Mike always hated these movies so this one is probably no exception, but what does Ethan, a casual fan think of the latest spinoff of the franchise? Let's just say Mike and Ethan got into a heated shouting match and the whole podcast is in jeopardy of continuing! It is weird to think that the R...

I have been in the habit of writing some lengthy descriptions in these podcasts to help with SEO. But Baby's Day Out doesn't deserve a good description. It deserves a description on the same level as the movie itself: So mediocre and boring it'll even make Google spit it out of its monolithic mouth. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your r...

Some Like It Hot is a 60-year-old movie with crossdressing. You wouldn't think it would hold up to 2019's standards right? Clearly, even some movies portrayals of homosexual characters the '90s don't hold up today. You may be surprised about how the movie portrays love and romance between the sexes. Sure it may not be progressive by today standards and cross-dressing is still mostl...

Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood wacky movie with an absurdly long title. We went in with extremely low expectations but were pleasantly surprised when this movie took Airplane! comedy style to Boyz n the Hood and Menace II Society. It's a goofy movie that doesn't actually have much of a plot so enjoy Mike and Ethan praise a movie unabashedly in...

Ricardo joins the podcast for an in-depth discussion on 2016's Shin Godzilla Ricardo has been on the podcast many times, but now he finally has a chance to display his full Godzilla knowledge. Let's have some complicated feelings about America while watching Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July! Unfortunately, Mike thought this movie was a romantic comedy, but that theory couldn't have been farther from the truth. Born on the Fourth of July is the true story of Ron Kovic. He was an ultra-patriotic Marine who came back from the Vietnam war paralyzed from the waist down....

The boys bring Julia on to add a little flavor to the podcast with Spice World! The hit all-girl band from the '90s, Spice Girls, made an absolutely bizarre movie with cameos of all of your favorite British pop-culture icons. What's the plot? WE DON'T NEED PLOT! WE HAVE SPIRIT AND SPUNK! In this episode, Julia tells Ethan and Mike what Spice Girl they would be, Ethan keeps mixing up th...

In celebration of the longest day of the year, summer solstice, we watched Nymphomaniac. It is the longest movie we've ever seen for the podcast! This movie, directed by Lars von Trier, it two whole movies split into one. It's all about sex addiction and artistic dread, so if you don't want to listen to Ethan and Mike describing sexual acts, then you should skip this one. Check out htt...

After what feels like every single listener begging them to watch The Birdcage, Ethan and Mike finally watch it. The movie stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a long time gay couple. Robin Williams owns "The Birdcage" which is a club Nathan Lane performs at in drag. The tension arrives when Robin Williams' son asks his father to not be gay when he meets his son's fiancee's...

We decided to watch Madea's Family Reunion as a send off to the nightmare month that has been MAY-dea. Also, it's the sequel to the movie that started it all. Don't worry nothing much has changed from his modern movies. All of the character's problems are because of a single tragedy that happened to them. Tyler Perry says, "Just get over it and all your problems and PTSD will g...

This episode and movie contain all your favorite characters. Aunt Bam, Madea, Brian and Uncle Joe all return to wreak havoc on a local fraterni...

In the third episode of MAY-dea, the boys are on life support during Madea's Big Happy Family. They're only halfway through the month and it's getting harder and harder to see the fun in Tyler Perry's Madea Cinematic Universe. This man's only message is to get you to start hitting your kids because that's the reason for all of today's problems apparently? Be sure to als...

In the second episode of MAYdea, we see how well Madea does with random rich white people living in her house in Madea's Witness Protection. The boys watch the 2018 Indian movie Tumbbad! With its oppressive atmosphere and brooding tone, it's a stark departure you'd typically expect from most Indian Bollywood style movies. Despite it being a massive industry, the only other Indian movie we watched was Happy New Year. This movie is NOTHING like that one. It surprisingly shares more in common with modern American horror movies suc...

It took a lot of convincing, but eventually, Ethan convinced Mike to watch M Night Shyamalan's latest, Glass. Mike was right and this podcast contains many reasons why you should avoid this movie starring Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Samuel L Jackson. The scenes in this movie have to be heard to be believed. Be sure to listen to our other podcasts about the same movie universe Unbreakable a...
