Bolsonaro lost the election is Brazil and was ordered to surrender his passports. Apparently, he’s fled to the US. I imagine Netanyahu will have to do the same. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Resort is now the failed fascist club. Now is a good time to watch the documentary Yanuni. The film follows the life and activism of Juma Xipaia, an Indigenous leader from the Brazilian Amazon. She’s spent her whole life...

Republicans say we can’t elect Muslims because they want to impose Sharia Law. What about Indian Residential Schools? Prime Minister John A McDonald’s said this in 1883: “When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages; he is surrounded by savages, and though he may learn to read and write, his habits, and training and mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a...

Did you know that apartheid South Africa borrowed Canada’s playbook? Both countries had large indigenous populations before European colonizers arrived. Both wanted to separate the indigenous population from white settlers and prevent them from owning land or voting. South African officials visited Canada to study how Indigenous people were controlled and managed separately from white citizens. So...

Tomorrow’s election could be a catastrophe for indigenous peoples and the world’s climate. Voters in Brazil head to the polls to elect their next president. Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of Jair Bolsonaro, who was Brazil’s former president. For indigenous groups like the Yanomami and Ye’kwana, a return to Bolsonarismo threatens their survival. Jair Bolsonaro stripped environmental protections and al...

There are at least 196 uncontacted Indigenous groups living in the world today, amounting to around 10,000 people. Most live in the Amazon rainforest. They know the modern world exists, but choose to avoid contact. History shows that first contact often leads to catastrophe. Following Columbus’s arrival in 1492, disease, warfare, and forced labor wiped out about 90% of the Indigenous population in...

This law allowed white people to kidnap Native American children and turn them into slaves. This is the genocide you’ve never heard of. The year was 1850 when the California legislature passed An Act for the Government and Protection of Indians. Under this law, any white person could declare Indians who were simply strolling about, who were not gainfully employed, to be vagrants. They could then t...

It makes me sad that this bear was destroyed. This is my cousin Allan Sylliboy. I’ll just read what he wrote: Today I am posting a Bear Drum surrounded by eight pointed Stars. A bear in Mi’kmaq is Mui’n. The Bear is one of the most intelligent land animals of North America. As a Spirit animal it stands for courage and strength. The Human foot represents our need to live in close harmony with the B...

Mount Rushmore was built to foster national pride and tell future civilizations how America was built. That is not what Indigenous people see. The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 granted the Black Hills exclusively to the Lakota Nation. To Native people, the monument is a symbol of broken promises. Imagine two children standing side by side looking at the four carved faces. The white child sees George...

You probably have not heard of the Holocaust that did not take place in Germany and did not involve Jewish people. That is why it is called the silent Holocaust. In the 1970s, the Guatemalan military began a genocidal campaign of mass killings and disappearances of the indigenous Ixil Maya population. In 1982, they employed a scorched earth campaign. Soldiers hunted down leftist guerrillas and sys...

This Indigenous man is the only person in history to create a system of writing from scratch by himself. What makes this even more remarkable, is that he invented it without knowing how to read or write. The man’s name was Sequoyah. And the year was 1809. At that time, the 300 diverse languages spoken by Native Americans did not have a written form. Sequoyah had seen white soldiers reading from wh...

The recent news about Pete Hegseth shows how history repeats itself. Hegseth wanted to livestream a military execution. He viewed this public cruelty as a righteous act. This is the exact mindset of a Christian Nationalist. But history shows that public brutality never creates peace. It only guarantees a massive backlash. We can see this clearly by looking at New Mexico in 1680. Spanish colonizers...

The White House created a website celebrating Christopher Columbus. Here is the truth they are hiding from you. On October 12 1492 Columbus landed on Guanahani. He did not discover anything. Up to 125000 Lucayan Taino people already lived there. Their ancestors called that land home for a thousand years. Columbus was not even the first European here because Leif Eriksson beat him by five centuries...

They built grand white palaces to celebrate white civilization. At the exact...

Twelve hundred years ago in the High Arctic, the Inuit mastered spaceborne technology by hand. All over the world, human history followed similar paths. The Stone Age featured the earliest stone tools. Then people built hot furnaces to melt copper and tin into bronze. Finally came iron, which required intense fire to extract metal from rock. Each step required wood or coal to burn. In the Arctic,...

Chapter I Congress is finally condemning a dark chapter in American history. Lawmakers introduced a historic resolution to address the forced sterilization of thousands of Native American women. This abuse happened during the 1970s. The federal government and the Indian Health Service hid this reality for decades. Survivors never stopped fighting for justice. Their voices now force a national reck...

To celebrate national Hispanic heritage month, let’s talk about the ancient Aymara peoples. The waru waru system is one of the most amazing achievements of ancient Andean engineering. The Aymara peoples developed it over 2000 years ago near Lake Titicaca. The Inca Empire knew of it but never adopted the technology. By the time the Spanish arrived, the fields were buried and nearly lost, though pil...

Europe was in the early days of the Renaissance. At the same time, empires in the Americas sustained more than 60 million people. Then Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492. Within a century, most of them were dead. The collapse of farming that followed was so great that it cooled the global climate. First contact brought disease. Europeans carried measles, smallpox, influenza and the bubonic plagu...
