Star Trek: From the Holodeck

The producers gave up…

In this episode of From the Holodeck, we review Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 4.04, “The Case of Chiaroscuro,” a film noir-inspired story that uses Una’s mistaken identity as a resistance leader to explore morality, institutional rules, and the ethics of resistance. While the episode offers a compelling thematic and aesthetic framework, its attempts at...

In this episode of From the Holodeck, we review Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 4.03, “Human Best Friend,” a broad amnesia-driven buddy comedy that raises questions about the changing style and sophistication of humor in contemporary Star Trek. While its juvenile comedy and modern dialogue often feel at odds with the franchise’s traditionally more culturally...

In this episode, we dive into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ “The Griffin Incident,” a Gothic horror story that uses haunting visions, psychological dread, and unresolved mysteries to explore identity, destiny, and the ghosts of both the past and the future. We discuss Spock, Kirk, and La’an’s deeply personal journeys, the philosophical idea of hauntology,...

Captain Pike faces grief, destiny, and an impossible choice as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds launches Season 4 with a pulpy adventure spanning dinosaurs, ancient Mars, and time travel. We explore how “Valles Marineris” uses the Novikov Self-Consistency Principle, evolutionary catastrophism, and Pike’s personal loss to ask whether destruction is sometimes the unavoidable condition...

This episode examines Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s “Series Acclimation Mil,” an ambitious, philosophically grounded story that uses SAM and Sisko’s legacy to explore choice and becoming. While the episode is conceptually strong and thematically coherent, its execution is uneven, with stylistic choices such as disembodied voiceovers and moments that verge on fourth-wall disruption undercutting it...

In this episode, we unpack Star Trek: Starfleet Academy S1.E4, “Vox in Excelso,” a thematically dense hour that uses debate, introspection, and Jay-Den’s divided identity to explore existential change, cultural evolution, and survival without teleology. We examine the Klingon Empire’s long-declining rigidity, Trek’s anti-paternalistic ethics, and how the episode smartly folds Nietzschean becoming,...

In this episode of From the Holodeck, Mike and Dave break down “Vitus Reflux,” the moment Starfleet Academy begins to reveal what it actually wants to explore. Moving away from galactic stakes and toward institutional values, the episode reframes competition as a test of empathy rather than brute strength, using the rivalry between Starfleet Academy...

In this episode of From the Holodeck, we examine the episode’s narrative overcrowding, frenetic aesthetic, and drift toward YA storytelling, while weighing its strongest element—the Betazed diplomatic storyline—against broader ideological shortcuts about youth, progress, and hope. The discussion ultimately asks whether the series is building a coherent Trek worldview, or trading meaning and world-...

Rather than a simple review, we deconstruct the episode’s narrative structure, its emphasis on youth, inheritance, and aspiration, and how these ideas align with—yet subtly strain—Star Trek’s...

In this episode of From the Holodeck, we delve into Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 4, “A Space Adventure Hour”—a holodeck murder mystery that quickly evolves into a metafictional love letter to Star Trek and its fans. We unpack the episode’s layered commentary on narrative identity, metamodernism, and canon revision, while also asking: was...

“Shuttle to Kenfori” leans into body horror to explore the fragility of identity, with Spock’s mind-meld and Batel’s Gorn infection highlighting the fear of losing control from within. The plant-fused zombies serve as a visceral metaphor for self-erasure, echoing the internal conflicts faced by each character. By tying physical transformation to psychological trauma, the episode...

“Wedding Bell Blues” may present itself as a comedic interlude, but its script struggles with structural coherence. Unlike the tighter pacing of “Hegemony, Part II,” this episode feels blocky and uneven—its tonal shifts more jarring than fluid. Yet in its messiness, it still gestures toward Star Trek’s ongoing experiment with genre and character elasticity, even...

Season 3 of Strange New Worlds kicks off with “Hegemony, Part II,” a visually assertive and narratively complex continuation of last season’s finale. This episode review examines its formal aesthetics, worldbuilding around the Gorn, and Pike’s evolving emotional landscape—while questioning whether the return to narrative equilibrium undermines the episode’s initial tension. We break down its...
